The bare bones information involved with Jovan Belcher murdering his girlfriend Kasandra Perkins and then killing himself at the Chiefs facility is sad enough. But the facts unearthed by the police report of the incident are downright chilling.
According to the report, obtained by the Kansas City Star, Belcher texted his secret girlfriend and told her he "would shoot" Perkins "if she didn't leave him alone."
Per the report, the secret girlfriend thought Belcher was joking about the actions he eventually carried out.
Belcher told the 22-year-old girlfriend that Perkins "knew exactly how to press his buttons and make him angry" and that Perkins "threatened to take all his money and his child if they split up."
There are, according to the Star, additional warning signs for Perkins and Belcher: Belcher's mother had recently moved in order to try and keep the peace, and the Chiefs apparently attempted to help the couple as well.
According to the full timeline, Belcher went out to a club with his secret girlfriend while Perkins was out at a concert. Around 12:45 a.m., Belcher headed home, but, according to a report from the Star, got in a fight with Perkins (possibly on the phone, though it's not clear) and ended up sleeping in his Bentley.
Police woke him up, but didn't detain him even though he initially appeared to be intoxicated. Belcher spent the night with "neighbors," apparently sleeping from about 4:30 a.m. to 6:45 a.m. He returned home, got in a fight with Perkins and fired 10 rounds into her body.
Belcher then drove to Arrowhead where he encountered Chiefs GM Scott Pioli.
"I’m sorry, Scott," Belcher told the GM. "I’ve done a bad thing to my girlfriend already. I want to talk with [linebackers coach Gary] Gibbs and Romeo [Crennel]."
Pioli brought Gibbs and Crennel to the parking lot even though security attempted to keep them from entering.
Crennel attempted to stop Belcher from turning the gun on himself, yelling "You’re taking the easy way out!" But Belcher, after kneeling behind a minivan in the parking lot and making a the sign of the cross on himself, fired a round into the right side of his head.
