Dolphins offensive coordinator Mike Sherman swears Miami is going to run the ball.

“It’s not to say we don’t need to run the ball, we do, but there came a point (in last week's loss to Carolina) where … I want to get the receivers in there,” Sherman said. “We have a tough decision on a group of receivers. The decision on running backs, there’s a little more clarity there.”

Through two preseason games the Dolphins have a combined 27 rushes for 80 yards and one touchdown with a long rush of 15 yards -- by third-string quarterback Pat Devlin. Sherman admitted the team is throwing the ball more due to uncertainty at receiver and quarterback. Cutting veteran WR Chad Johnson led to a void in the unit while rookie QB Ryan Tannehill only recently claimed the starting job.

Still, Sherman joked he has to convince his offensive linemen the team will be more committed to running the ball on Friday against Atlanta in the team’s third preseason game.

“I would like us to get back to more of a norm here pretty quick, before the first ball game because, in this league, you’re going to have to be able to run the football,” Sherman said. “I know I keep telling the linemen that. I don’t know if they believe me or not. You have to be able to run the football and we definitely will get back to that.”

Wake making waves: Defensive end Cameron Wake returned to practice.

The former Pro Bowler missed practice last week and Friday’s preseason game against Carolina as he recovered from whiplash he suffered in a recent car accident. But Wake didn’t appear to be rusty as he wasted little time recording a sack against quarterback Matt Moore in his first series back on Monday.

It was a good feeling for Wake to make a positive impact. The veteran was forced to watch against the Panthers as the first-team defense was again embarrassed. Miami has been outscored a combined 24-0 in the first quarters of two preseason games.

"We don't get bullied; that's one thing you can't say about us is anyone's going to outphysical us,'' Wake told the South Florida Sun Sentinel. "I don't pay much attention to the outside world especially, as long as these sweaty people in here aren't panicking and they're chipping away at their craft every day."

And they shouldn’t panic with Wake back in pads. The former Penn State linebacker led the team with 8.5 sacks last year and should help solidify a defense that has been hampered by injuries to starters the past two weeks.
