With the news last month that the Titans had signed safety Michael Griffin to a five-year, $35 million contract with $15 million guaranteed, reports emerged that the 49ers franchise-tagged safety Dashon Goldson wanted almost identical figures.
He’ll have to wait a while to see that kind of money.
Ben Dogra, Goldson’s agent, told CSN Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco that a long-term deal would not be not forthcoming before Monday’s 4 p.m. ET deadline. That means Goldson will play under the $6.2 million tag for 2012.
It’s yet another disappointing contract moment for Goldson, whose former agent, Drew Rosenhaus, convinced him to turn down a five-year, $25 million contract that was offered before the 2011 season because Rosenhaus claimed he could get Goldson a five-year, $40 million deal (what San Diego’s Eric Weddle had been awarded). Instead, Goldson was forced to sign a one-year, $2 million contract that led to Rosenhaus’ ouster.
Goldson will make more than three times that amount for 2012, but he’s still without a long-term deal. Which probably still doesn’t sit well with Goldson, who could have made it all happen before last year.
