Probable starter: Andrew Luck. The rookie from Stanford was essentially chosen as the starter while he was still playing in Palo Alto. Still, it's now official after his first week of camp when he impressed just about everyone with just about everything he did.
Backups: Drew Stanton (7th season), Chandler Harnish (R)
It's pretty much Luck or bust. Harnish was the final pick in the 2012 draft, and Stanton has seen only limited playing time in his six years as a pro. Stanton has some experience as a spot starter in Detroit, so he'll figure to be the backup once the season begins.
A season ago: There's no way around it: The Colts quarterback situation in 2011 was an absolute mess. Mainstay Peyton Manning was out all season with a neck injury, and the Kerry Collins/Curtis Painter/Dan Orlovsky triumvirate never exactly panned out. Painter led the three with 1,541 yards and six touchdowns. Orlovsky was at the helm, however, for both of Indianapolis' wins. None of them remain with the team.
Prognosis: Luck has been impressive throughout camp so far, and it would appear that the veterans and fellow young players alike have taken a shine to him. There's no question Luck will take some time to develop -- as did Peyton Manning -- but he's expected to at least show improvement from the debacle last season.
Coachspeak: Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians: "I've never been around a guy who can learn that fast. I've been around guys who are extremely smart, worked extremely hard at it, but he just gets it. It's kind of scary that he can -- I have to watch that he and I don't get ahead of everybody else, because his learning curve is so quick."
