When left tackle J'Marcus Webb lined up Wednesday with starters two straight days it seemed unusual, because the training camp plan had been to alternate every other day with Chris Williams. When Willams then lined up at right tackle it seemed to indicate a possible end to the battle at left tackle.
Coach Lovie Smith tried to downplay the situation as he usually does this time of year.
"We have a system, a rotation that we're looking at," he said. "We want to get a good look at everyone and that's what we're doing right now."
However, the system so far had never included Williams at right tackle and Gabe Carimi playing with the second string at right tackle, as it did toward the end of practice.
It looks like Webb has gained a good footing at left tackle so coaches are trying to either get Williams snaps at the right side since he'll be a swing tackle, or they're going to let him compete with Carimi, who is coming off two knee surgeries.
Williams hadn't played right tackle since 2009. He started 22 games at left guard over the past two seasons, and originally was drafted to be a left tackle before a back surgery cost him his rookie season.
"It’s been a while since I played on the right side, but it is nothing I am uncomfortable with," Williams said. "Just switching sides."
Webb didn't declare victory, but didn't complain about the extra snaps.
"Him giving me those more reps will give me more time to work my trade," Webb said.
Webb stood his ground better against Julius Peppers in two-on-two pass rushing drills than he had on Tuesday, but did get thrown to the ground once by Peppers.
