The Browns didn't exactly jump into the deep end of the free agency pool. They only waded in the shallow water. But they did manage to secure talent and depth on a defensive line lacking in both.
Frostee Rucker is set as the starter on the right side. Juqua Parker should receive significant playing time there as well. Both will also spell LDE Jabaal Sheard, who rarely came off the field in 2011 and eventually wore down.
Rucker made a stop once out of every 14.9 snaps he played last season, which ranked him first in the NFL, according to Pro Football Focus. He also managed a career-high four sacks in Cincinnati a year ago. Coach Pat Shurmur has been impressed.
"He's a pass-rusher, but he's thick enough to play the run," he said.
The combination of Rucker and Parker represents a vast improvement over last season at right end, though a regression would have been virtually impossible. The Browns searched in vain for an answer between Jayme Mitchell, Emmanuel Stephens and Brian Schaefering. None boasted the quickness to rush the passer or stop running backs turning the corner. Such should not be the case with Rucker and Parker.
