WR -- Josh Gordon vs. Mohamed Massaquoi. Massaquoi has regressed since a promising rookie season. Enter Gordon, whom the Browns snagged in the recent supplemental draft. Gordon boasts far more speed and upside, but one wonders if his route-running develops enough in training camp for him to earn the starting spot. Team president Mike Holmgren has offered his belief that Massaquoi will take a huge step forward in 2012, but the embattled wide receiver has shown little evidence of standout talent. The Browns are desperate to find a receiver who can stretch the field vertically and whose speed is worthy of the strong arm of new QB Brandon Weeden. Gordon can certainly fill that role.
FS -- Usama Young vs. Eric Hagg. The surprise of minicamp was Hagg, a second-year safety, being used almost exclusively with the starters, but Young is not out of the race. Most believed he would replace former starter Mike Adams, who left for Denver in free agency. The Browns secondary was among the least opportunistic in the NFL last season, as star cornerback Joe Haden failed to make an interception. Defensive coordinator Dick Jauron and coach Pat Shurmur will make their decision at this position based on athleticism and dependability. If Hagg plays with the first unit early in training camp and early in the preseason, it would seem he's locked in as the starter.
TE -- Benjamin Watson vs. Jordan Cameron. OK, maybe the Browns will just hand the job to Watson based on his veteran status. But injuries and age caught up with him in 2011 and the athletic Cameron is emerging as a potential receiver. The Browns are loaded at this position, as Evan Moore and Alex Smith should also receive playing time. But if the 31-year-old Watson will be forced to fend off any competitor, it should be Cameron. His mobility and ability to separate from linebackers and find open seams in the zone have been impressive. His 6-5, 245-pound frame is an ideal one for a tight end, but it remains to be seen if he blocks well enough to earn the starting job. After all, Weeden will be handing the ball to RB Trent Richardson quite often.
