  • Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Opening year at Triple-A

Winn is beginning the 2023 season at Triple-A Memphis.

There was some thought that Winn might repeat Double-A for a bit, but he showed so well this spring that he's getting the boost to Triple-A just 10 days after his 21st birthday. The toolsy young shortstop slashed .333/.393/.556 with two home runs, two doubles, two triples and four stolen bases over 18 games (61 plate appearances) in the Grapefruit League. He seems certain to make his MLB debut at some point this summer.

  • Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Looking good in spring

Winn is hitting .389 (7-for-18) with a home run, a double, three stolen bases and five runs scored through seven Grapefruit League games.

Winn's strong spring comes with the caveat that he has yet to play an inning at Triple-A and will likely begin the season with at least a brief stint at Double-A Springfield. He had a .781 OPS with 11 homers and 28 steals over 86 games at that level last season, though he took a noticeable step down from his work at High-A Peoria. Winn, a natural shortstop, is on track to contend for a major-league job in 2024. Tommy Edman and Paul DeJong figure to see most of the time there in 2023.

  • Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Sparks in 2022

    Winn put together a .283/.364/.468 batting line with 12 home runs, 43 steals (on 48 attempts) and a 63:115 BB:K over 119 games across High-A and Double-A in 2022.

While he fell off a bit toward the end of the Double-A season, that's nothing to worry about, considering that Winn had never played such a long campaign before. A second-round pick in 2020, Winn has only been a full-time shortstop for two full seasons, yet his glovework has come along impressively and his arm might already be the best in the business at the position. And oh yeah, he can hit, he can run, and he's got plate discipline, too. It's not clear whether we'll see Winn in the big leagues in 2023, but 2024 could be realistic.

  • Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Showing pop, speed in Double-A

Winn is hitting .268/.345/.453 with 10 homers and 18 steals through 61 games with Double-A Springfield.

He's had significant hot and cold stretches, and Winn is actually now in the midst of a cooler one, having gone just 2-for-15 over his last four games -- which comes on the heels of an 11-game stretch in which he hit .346 with a 1.077 OPS. But as they say, speed never slumps, and Winn has remained active on the basepaths even when his bat hasn't been as effective. He's up to 33 steals now across two levels of the minors this year, which combines well with his solid plate discipline, growing power and cannon arm at shortstop to make Winn an exciting prospect for a Cardinals team that's looking for a long-term answer at his position.

  • Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Streaky in Double-A so far

Winn has produced a .265/.353/.471 slash line with four homers, four steals on six attempts and a 15:25 BB:K through 26 games since being promoted to Double-A Springfield.

He actually carried over his red-hot hitting from High-A to the new level at first, batting .309 with a .922 OPS over his first 17 games with Springfield. However, Winn has cooled off recently, going just 6-for-34 (.176) across his last nine contests, including an 0-for-6 effort Thursday. Of course, he's drawn eight walks and stolen three bases in that span, which certainly helps take the edge off the mini-slump. The composite numbers are still fantastic for a 20-year-old in Double-A, and after Winn didn't show much over-the-fence power in High-A (just one homer, but 11 doubles and seven triples in 33 games), it's nice to see him going yard more often. Considering that Winn is only in his second season as a full-time position player after being a true two-way player in high school, his progress has been astonishing.

  • Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Rises to Double-A

The Cardinals promoted Winn from High-A Peoria to Double-A Springfield on Tuesday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

Winn will be joined in Springfield by two of the Cardinals' other top prospects in right-handed starters Gordon Graceffo and Michael McGreevy, who were also bumped up from High-A Peoria. Over his 147 plate appearances at Peoria this season, the 20-year-old Winn produced a .349/.404/.566 slash line while going 15-for-15 on stolen-base attempts.

  • Cardinals' Masyn Winn: On 10-game hitting streak

Winn has hit safely in 10 straight games (and reached safely in all 11) for High-A Peoria, accumulating a .415/.468/.683 line with a homer, two doubles, three triples and four steals so far this season.

Winn came into pro ball with questions as to whether he'd stick as a pitcher or a shortstop, and after he posted modest results with the bat last year, there were some questions as to the Cardinals' intentions for him. But they stuck with him at short, and he's rewarded them by flashing tremendous plate discipline (6:7 BB:K) as well as game-breaking speed early in 2022. He likely won't be fast-tracked through the minor leagues, but if Winn keeps hitting this way, a promotion to Double-A should certainly be forthcoming.

  • Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Moving on to High-A

The Cardinals promoted Winn from Low-A Palm Beach to High-A Peoria on Monday.

Winn will be joined in Peoria by outfielder Todd Lott and lefty pitcher Kevin Marnon, both of whom also received promotions Monday. A 2020 second-round pick, Winn is the clear top prospect of the trio, and one of the more impressive talents in the lower levels of the minors. In his first taste of professional ball at Palm Beach, Winn slashed .262/.370/.388 with three home runs and a 16-for-18 success rate on stolen-base attempts across 284 plate appearances. The 19-year-old shortstop possesses the athleticism and arm to stick at the position over the long haul, and he should tap into more power as he adds strength to his 5-foot-11, 180-pound frame.
