Padres' Ryan Weathers: Changes made to delivery
Weathers has revamped his delivery for the upcoming season, Bob Scanlan of Bally Sports San Diego reports.
Weathers now has added an overhead delivery to his mechanics, and Scanlan reports that the left-hander has done "lots of work" in the offseason. The left-hander showed flashes of brilliance in the first-half of 2021, but he has struggled since, making just one appearance for the Padres in 2022 and registering a 6.73 ERA over 123 innings for Triple-A El Paso. There's more risk than reward in Weathers' profile at this stage, but keep in mind he's only 23 years old, and there's still the potential for long-term success.

Padres' Ryan Weathers: Returns to minor leagues
The Padres optioned Weathers to Triple-A El Paso on Thursday.
San Diego already has six other healthy starting pitchers on the active roster and could get another (Mike Clevinger) back from the COVID-19-related injured list next week, so Weathers' demotion was fully expected regardless of how he performed in Wednesday's 19-5 win over the Cubs. Even though the Padres won comfortably, Weathers didn't factor into the decision in his first start with the big club after surrendering four runs on six hits and four walks across 3.2 innings prior to his departure.

Padres' Ryan Weathers: Hit hard by Cubs
Weathers registered a no-decision during Wednesday's 19-5 win against the Cubs, allowing four runs on six hits and four walks with three strikeouts in 3.2 innings.
Making his 2022 debut, Weathers submitted a 1-2-3 first inning but surrendered seven baserunners -- including two walks with the bases loaded -- and all four runs in the second. San Diego rallied for a big win, but the 22-year-old didn't pitch deep enough to reap a potential win. The performance didn't do any favors toward Weather's roster spot, though he has a shot to stick with the team if Mike Clevinger's COVID-19 absence is prolonged.

Padres' Ryan Weathers: Recalled prior to Wednesday's start
Weathers was recalled from Triple-A El Paso ahead of Wednesday's start against the Cubs.
The 22-year-old has struggled in the minors early in the year, posting a 7.29 ERA and 1.85 WHIP in 54.1 innings over 12 starts. However, he'll make a spot start at Wrigley Field on Wednesday with Mike Clevinger (illness) on the COVID-19 injured list. Padres' Ryan Weathers: Tabbed to start Wednesday
The Padres will call up Weathers from Triple-A El Paso to have him start Wednesday's game in Chicago against the Cubs, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Even with Mike Clevinger (illness) on the COVID-19-related injured list, the Padres still have six starters on hand, but Weathers will nonetheless be added to the mix amid a particularly heavy stretch of games for San Diego. As a rookie a season ago, Weathers impressed over his first handful of outings with the big club, but he faltered badly in the second half and was eventually moved to the bullpen. The 22-year-old lefty hasn't shown much improvement from a statistical standpoint while spending the entire 2022 campaign to date at Triple-A (7.29 ERA, 1.85 WHIP and 37:24 K:BB in 54.1 innings), so he's unlikely to have a long leash if he runs into trouble early Wednesday.

Even with Mike Clevinger (knee) set to begin the season on the injured list, Weathers' slim chances of breaking camp as a member of the Padres' rotation were dashed after the Friars acquired Sean Manaea from the Athletics on Sunday. With MacKenzie Gore turning heads in spring training, Weathers may not be the first prized young arm to get a call-up to the majors if San Diego has an opening at the rotation at some point early on in 2022. The Padres will likely want the 22-year-old lefty to first find some extended success at Triple-A after he faded badly down the stretch for the big club in 2021 to finish with a 5.32 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 10.5 K-BB% across 94.2 innings.

Padres' Ryan Weathers: Doesn't fare well in spot start
Weathers allowed five runs on five hits and three walks while striking out two batters over three innings against the Dodgers on Wednesday. He did not factor into the decision.
Weathers picked up a spot start for the Padres on Wednesday and struggled to hold the Dodgers in check. Most of the damage against him was done in the opening frame, as the Dodgers scored a pair of runs before AJ Pollock cranked a two-run homer to left center. Another run would score the following inning off Corey Seager's second double of the night before Weathers ended his day with a scoreless third. The 21-year-old rookie had plenty of hiccups along the way but certainly flashed some long-term potential after posting a 2.91 ERA over 58.2 innings before the All-Star break. He struggled mightily in the second half, however, as his ERA shot up to a 5.32. He also posted a 1.38 WHIP and 72:30 K:BB over 94.2 innings for the season.

After a run of rough starts following the All-Star break, Weathers was dropped from the rotation in late August and has spent the past month in the bullpen. He's achieved better results while working in a low-leverage role (one earned run allowed, 8:1 K:BB in 8.1 innings), but Weathers will be moved back to the rotation out of necessity for the final week of the season with Chris Paddack (elbow) and Blake Snell (groin) on the shelf and Jake Arrieta no longer with the organization. Weathers will be pitching on three days' rest after covering two innings in relief Saturday versus Atlanta, so he likely won't be asked to work especially deep into Wednesday's start.

In his last six outings, Weathers has been lit up for 31 earned runs -- including 11 home runs -- in 20.2 innings. Due to the Padres' dwindling rotation depth, Weathers has been forced to take his lumps at the big-league level, but Chris Paddack (oblique) is set to return from the IL on Monday, and Arrieta should be back a few days later. Those impending additions will give the Padres a full five-man rotation for the first time in weeks.

Weathers (4-7) took the loss in Saturday's 10-2 defeat by the Angels, allowing three runs on four hits with one strikeout in three innings.
While he lasted just three innings and 54 pitches, Weathers limited the damage to two home runs, though the Padres only scored two in the game. In his last appearance Aug. 22 against the Phillies, Weathers worked behind opener Craig Stammen. The rookie didn't take well to the primary-pitcher role, covering two innings while giving up three runs on five hits to inflate his ERA to 5.27. After starting the season on a promising note, Weathers has faded badly since the beginning of June, and the Padres' mounting list of injured starting pitchers is likely the only thing keeping him in the rotation at this point. He could end up moving to the bullpen once the likes of Chris Paddack (oblique), Dinelson Lamet (hip/forearm) and Jake Arrieta (hamstring) start returning from the injured list.

Working as a primary pitcher out of the bullpen behind Craig Stammen rather than in a starting role as he had in his most recent outings, Weathers didn't notice dramatically better results. Weathers yielded five runs on eight hits over four innings in Monday's loss to the Rockies. He struck out three and did not factor in the decision.
Weathers got off to a rough start, coughing up a leadoff blast to Connor Joe. The rest of the damage against him came during a four-run fourth inning, including a two-run homer by Charlie Blackmon. It was his fourth consecutive outing allowing at least five runs but he managed to avoid taking a fourth straight loss. Weathers' ERA shot up to 5.06 with a 59:26 K:BB through 78.1 innings this season. He's currently lined up to face the Phillies at home this weekend.
