Player Outlook
Michael Burrows was among the Pirates' top pitching prospects entering 2023 and had progressed to Triple-A Indianapolis by the close of the 2022 campaign. However, he got injured before he had the chance to make his big-league debut and ultimately underwent Tommy John surgery in late April. He isn't projected to return until late in 2024 and may have missed his best chance to contribute to the major-league rotation, as he's been surpassed by Quinn Priester, Paul Skenes and Jared Jones as well as perhaps Anthony Solometo, Bubba Chandler and Braxton Ashcraft within Pittsburgh's system.

  • Pirates' Mike Burrows: Optioned to minors

The Pirates optioned Burrows (elbow) to the minor leagues Friday, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Burrows had his 2023 season cut short when he underwent Tommy John surgery in late April. The right-hander will start the 2024 season in the minors and look to work his way up to the majors.

  • Pirates' Mike Burrows: Undergoes Tommy John surgery

Burrows underwent surgery Wednesday to repair damage to the UCL in his right elbow, Alex Stumpf of DKPittsburghSports.com reports. It was Tommy John surgery, per a followup report Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com, and Burrows is expected to be sidelined for the next 14-to-16 months. The 23-year-old had logged just two starts this season at Triple-A Indianapolis before his UCL gave out. He was an 11th-round pick in the 2018 First-Year Player Draft.

  • Pirates' Mike Burrows: Hits Triple-A IL

Triple-A Indianapolis placed Burrows (forearm) on its 7-day injured list April 11. Burrows' move to the IL was fully expected after Pirates general manager Ben Cherington disclosed that the right-hander suffered a forearm injury in his second outing of the season for Indianapolis back on April 8. The 23-year-old is without a definitive timeline for a return.

  • Pirates' Mike Burrows: Unlucky in Triple-A

Burrows has a 4.93 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 34:9 K:BB through 34.2 innings with Triple-A Indianapolis. After a dominant showing in Double-A, the 22-year-old hasn't been nearly so successful at the higher level. In fact, he's only managed to finish five innings one time in nine appearances (seven starts), and his strikeout rate has dipped quite a bit (from 11.9 K/9 to 8.8). That said, Burrows hasn't had great luck in Triple-A -- he's allowed a .327 BABIP while posting just a 61.9 percent strand rate, so he's due for some positive regression. With two very good pitches (a mid-to-high-90s fastball and a sharp curveball), Burrows has a floor as a high-leverage bullpen arm, but he still has a chance to be a big-league starter if he can develop his changeup into a plus offering.

The 22-year-old righty posted a 2.94 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 69:19 K:BB in 52 innings across 12 starts at Double-A. Burrows has been fantastic for most of the season and will make his Triple-A debut Sunday.
