Justin Upton remains one of the most intriguing names on the trade block. There are some reasons to believe the Diamondbacks are serious about dealing away their superstar right fielder, The Arizona Republic's Nick Piecoro reported.
- The Diamondbacks are fairly deep in the outfield. Trading away Upton would allow the team to give more playing time to Gerardo Parra. The team could also promote A.J. Pollack or Adam Eaton from Triple-A to give their outfield a new look.
- The team would likely receive a lot for Upton. Piecoro notes that the Diamondbacks would probably seek a third baseman, shortstop or starting pitching in the deal.
- Upton may not be well liked in the organization. Piecoro cites managing general partner Ken Kendrick's comments from last month as a reason the D-Backs may have soured on Upton. Upton also doesn't seem to have a great relationship with manager Kirk Gibson, and GM Kevin Towers has no ties to Upton.
- Piecoro mentioned that the Pirates are interested, but said they may not have the pieces. He said the Blue Jays would be a nice fit.
Other notes:
- Phillies' closer Jonathan Papelbon would be disappointed if Cole Hamels were traded, noted CSNPhilly.com's Jim Salisbury. Papelbon also said the clubhouse probably wouldn't take it too well if Hamels were dealt. Papelbon still believes the team has a chance to compete this season.
- The Royals intend to add a starting pitcher via free agency this off-season, CBSSports.com's Danny Knobler reported. A Royals executive said the team will not be looking for a fifth starter, but someone who can make a bigger impact.
- Felix Hernandez is staying put at the deadline, says CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman. Heyman spoke to Mariners' GM Jack Zduriencik, who said Hernandez will remain a Mariner through the season. Though they won't part with Hernandez, Heyman lists Kevin Millwood, Jason Vargas, Brandon League and Miguel Olivo as potential players the Mariners could deal.
