The fallout from Notre Dame's six player, two-arrest Friday evening has begun. Brian Kelly's discipline decision includes the immediate dismissal of Max Redfield, a senior starting safety and NFL Draft prospect, and an indefinite suspension for cornerback Devin Butler.
Brian Kelly discussed his disappointment in the players near the end of a strongly worded statement.
"The expectations we set for the members of our team are high, but they are especially so for the upperclassmen who are expected to provide leadership and a positive example to the other members of the team," Kelly said. "Max and, at least at this stage in the review of his case, Devin, have failed in that regard and so have lost the privilege of continuing to be part of our team."
Redfield was involved in a traffic stop with wide receiver Kevin Stepherson Jr., running back Dexter Williams, cornerback Ashton White and linebacker Te'Von Coney. When searching the car -- which also had a broken tail light -- officers also found a loaded handgun. All five players were booked on misdemeanor marijuana possession. Redfield, Williams and Stepherson were also charged with possession of a gun without a license.
Butler was arrested around 12:30 a.m. Saturday at the popular Linebacker Lounge bar near campus on battery of a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest charges after getting an altercation and allegedly hitting an officer. The cornerback already was out because of a foot injury projected to keep him sidelined until October.
While the other four players arrested remain with the team, Kelly said they could face further discipline after the courts and campus judicial system render decisions. He reminded all that those "processes could yet impact their standing with the University and the team."
