Michigan State vs. Pittsburgh score: Sparty posts 21 fourth-quarter points in epic Peach Bowl 2021 comeback

No. 10 Michigan State pulled off a 31-21 come-from-behind victory over No. 12 Pittsburgh on Thursday night, scoring 15 points over the final 3 minutes to pull off the epic win in the 2021 Peach Bowl. The Spartans scored 21 unanswered points in the final frame after trailing 21-10 at the end of the third quarter.

Before the game started, the story was how Pitt quarterback and Heisman Trophy finalist Kenny Pickett had opted out of the game to prepare for the NFL Draft, forcing the Panthers to turn the ball over to backup Nick Patti. It wasn't long until they had to move to their third-stringer as Patti suffered a shoulder injury while scoring a 16-yard touchdown to tie the game 7-7 in the first quarter. Davis Beville replaced him, and while the Panthers held on for as long as possible, the loss of Patti was simply too much to overcome.

The truth is that Michigan State kept Pitt in the game. The Spartans held the Panthers to 274 yards of offense on the evening but kept shooting themselves in the foot offensively. Perhaps that shouldn't have been a surprise considering Sparty was missing star running back Kenneth Walker III.

Michigan State turned the ball over twice, including once in the red zone, and missed a field goal to boot. The second turnover was a Payton Thorne fumble on the second play of the second half that Pitt's Cam Bright scooped up and returned for a 26-yard touchdown. It's the last time Pitt scored in the game.

Michigan State found paydirt on three fourth-quarter touchdowns, including a 22-yard scoring pass to Jayden Reed to take the lead with 2:51 remaining. The Panthers responded with a nice drive into Spartans territory, but Beville was intercepted by Cal Haladay, who took the ball 78 yards to the house to finish Pitt. The pick six swung the result of the game in its final seconds for bettors; Michigan State closed as 3.5-point favorites, according to Caesars Sportsbook.

Michigan State QB Payton Thorne ended his effort with 354 yards passing and three touchdowns to help offset his turnover. Jalen Nailor was Thorne's leading target, catching six passes for 108 yards. Pitt was led by Jordan Addison, who caught seven passes for 114 yards and picked up 28 yards on the ground, too, but he was the Panthers' only reliable source of offense, and he couldn't do it alone.

The win means Michigan State finishes with a record of 11-2, the most in a single season for the program since it went 12-2 in 2015. Pitt finishes its campaign at 11-3, its most wins in a season since 1981.

INTERCEPTION: Pitt's Brandon Hill picks off a Payton Thorne pass inside the red zone to get a big stop for the Panthers defense. Can they do anything to take advantage? There's 2:03 left in the half and Pitt has two timeouts.

ANOTHER THREE AND OUT FOR PITT: There's a lot of game left to go, but I gotta say, I'm not optimistic about Pitt's offense at the moment. As you'd expect, it's a limited playbook with Beville in, and they just appear completely out of sync. Right now the Panthers need to survive the rest of this half and hope to get things figure out at halftime.

Michigan State starts at the MSU 42.

MICHIGAN STATE PUNT: The early touchdowns have turned into punts and missed field goals. Michigan State manages to pick up a first down, but it can't get a second. Pitt starts at the Pitt 11 following a 42-yard punt.

THREE AND OUT: The Panthers aren't able to do anything following the missed Michigan State field goal. The offense has stalled out after losing Patti. Shouldn't be much of a surprise considering Patti was already replacing Kenny Pickett. Michigan State gets the ball back at the MSU 22 following the punt.

MISSED FG: Michigan State puts together a nice drive and has a 1st and goal from inside the 5. Then it all stopped working! Sparty moves backward and then Matt Coghlin misses a 33-yard FG attempt. It's still 10-7 Michigan State early in the 2nd.

PITT PUNT: The Panthers aren't able to get much done, and a 9-yard loss on a sack ends the drive. Michigan State's drive will start at the MSU 23 following a 43-yard punt.

NICK PATTI OUT: Patti has emerged from the locker room with his left arm in a sling and no pads. His night is over and Davis Beville is in at QB.

FIELD GOAL MICHIGAN STATE: The Spartans get into the red zone but penalties stall the drive and they settle for three. It's 10-7 Spartans.

INJURY: He's walking on his own and it's hard to know what's wrong, but Nick Patti is walking to the locker room with Pitt trainers after scoring that touchdown.

TOUCHDOWN PITT: What a run by Nick Patti! With nobody open on 3rd and 8, Patti scrambles to his left and beats multiple MSU defenders to the corner where he just manages to nose the pylon with the ball as he goes out of bounds. It's a 12-play, 75-yard touchdown drive to tie the game 7-7 and we are off to a flying start in Atlanta.

Pitt learned its lesson. It'll start the next possession at the 25 following a touchback.
