WASHINGTON, D.C. (AP) Caylin Newton threw for a touchdown and ran for two more, including a 5-yard run 39 seconds to play, as Howard beat Bethune-Cookman 26-24 on Saturday to snap a six-game losing streak in the series.

Trailing 24-20 after a Wildcats' field goal at the end of the third quarter, Newton capped a nine-play, 45-yard drive with the short scoring run, handing Bethune-Cookman its first loss on Howard's home field since 1996.

Newton was 12 of 25 for 157 yards passing and an interception, and gained 154 yards on 22 carries, including a 1-yard scoring plunge that put Howard (2-2, 1-0 MEAC) up 21-20 early in the third. He connected with Anthony Philyaw on a 5-yard TD pass to tie it at 14 at halftime.

Que'shaun Byrd's 24-yard TD run gave Bethune-Cookman a 21-20 edge before Ureil Hernandez added a 42-yard field goal.

Michael Jones gained 122 yards on 21 carries for the Wildcats (1-3, 0-1). Larry Brihm scored on a 20-yard run and was 16 of 28 for 185 yards passing with a 23-yard TD pass to Frank Brown.

Brown finished with seven catches for 84 yards and one touchdown.
