When Ty Johnson arrived at Villanova in the fall of 2011, he seemed ideal for Jay Wright’s offense. Aggressive and offensive-minded, Johnson was the perfect fit.

During his freshman season, though, Johnson could never find consistency. And with the arrival of two potential starters, it looks like he saw the writing on the wall. Villanova announced Wednesday that Johnson was transferring.

“We’re going to miss Ty,” Wright said in a release. “He has handled this with class. We all respect his work ethic, athletic ability and commitment to this program. We want what’s best for Ty.”

Johnson, a 6-foot-3 New Jersey native, averaged 3.3 points and 2.0 assists in 17.7 minutes last season.

Wright brought in heralded recruit Ryan Arcidiacono this season, while Wake Forest transfer Tony Chennault was also cleared to play immediately. Darrun Hilliard played well in spurts last season and could steal the starting two-guard spot. Achraf Yacoubou is a solid defender. Simply put, there might not have been enough minutes to go around this season. In fact, Johnson played just nine minutes in Villanova’s exhibition game.

Boston College’s Jordan Daniels also transferring

Johnson wasn’t the only transfer on Wednesday, as sources told CBSSports.com’s Jeff Goodman that Boston College sophomore Jordan Daniels was leaving the Eagles.

Daniels, a 5-foot-8 guard, started 25 games last season for Steve Donahue. He averaged 6.4 points and 2.6 assists per game.

However, as Goodman pointed out on Twitter, freshmen Olivier Hanlan and Joe Rahon were set to get more playing time than Daniels this season.
