  • Devils' Timo Meier: Signs eight-year contract

    Meier signed an eight-year, $70.4 million contract with New Jersey on Wednesday, Pierre LeBrun of TSN reports. Meier completed his four-year, $24 million contract and was set to become a restricted free agent Saturday. He had 66 points in 78 contests split between San Jose and New Jersey last season, including a career-high 40 goals. The 26-year-old also contributed 43 PIM, 327 shots and 154 hits in 2022-23. The Devils have cemented their forward core with Meier, Jack Hughes, Jesper Bratt, Nico Hischier and Ondrej Palat all locked up through at least 2026-27.

    Meier assisted on the first goal of the game and scored on the power play in Thursday's 3-2 overtime loss to Carolina. Meier has not been the high-impact player New Jersey hoped it was getting at the trade deadline. Over 11 postseason games, Meier had just two goals and two assists. However, an optimist would note that he put up points in three straight games before the Devils were eliminated. We will never know if it was the start of a hot streak or just a blip after starting the playoffs with an eight-game slump.
