Jets' Matt Forte: Announces retirement from NFL
Forte (knee) announced his retirement from the NFL on Wednesday in a statement released to SportsSpectrum.com.
Though he indicated earlier this month that he intended to play in 2018, Forte has apparently reconsidered his future in football and will call an end to a productive 10-year career. Forte's decision to step away from the NFL frees up $3 million in salary-cap space for the Jets during the upcoming season, while also sparing the organization of having to cut him ahead of the start of the new league year. The 32-year-old saw his effectiveness wane in his two seasons in New York while battling knee issues, but has generally been one of the NFL's top three-down backs since entering the league as a second-round pick of the Bears in 2008. Forte, a two-time Pro Bowl honoree, retires with career marks of 9,746 rushing yards, 554 receptions, 4,672 receiving yards and 75 touchdowns over 146 regular-season contests.

Jets' Matt Forte: Intends to play in 2018
Forte (knee) said Friday that he's hopeful to continue his playing career in 2018, Calvin Watkins of ESPN.com reports.
If Forte is serious about keeping his career alive, he'll likely have to find a new home, as the Jets are expected to cut the 32-year-old during the offseason. Though he's still an effective pass catcher, Forte has been limited by chronic knee problems during his past two seasons in New York that have limited him to 3.7 yards per carry both in 2016 and 2017. As a result, it's unlikely that any team that picks Forte up this offseason would earmark the veteran for much more than a third-down role.

Jets' Matt Forte: Likely to be cut
Forte (knee) is likely to be cut this offseason, NorthJersey.com reports.
Forte battled a number of injuries this season, and with Bilal Powell and Eliajah McGuire handling the workload in his absence, there appears little reason for the Jets to bring back the 32-year-old. Forte played only 13 games this year, rushing 103 times for 381 yards and two touchdowns while adding 37 receptions on 45 targets for 293 receiving yards and another score. He's still a usable running back when healthy, but his days of handling a full complement of touches seem over.

Jets' Matt Forte: Lands on IR
The Jets placed Forte (knee) on injured reserve Saturday.
Forte will finish his season with a career-low 381 yards rushing and just two touchdowns. He also provided 293 yards and one touchdown through the air on 37 receptions. The 32-year-old running back will now set his sights on the 2018 season, assuming he wants to return.. In his absence, Bilal Powell and Elija McGuire figure to see the majority of the work in the Jets' backfield.
