Mike Adams: Hanging up cleats
Adams announced his retirement from football Wednesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
The 38-year-old safety was a 16-game starter as recently as 2018, which capped off a stretch of five consecutive seasons with multiple interceptions and 69 or more tackles. Adams then spent 2019 in a backup role with the Texans, his sixth team in 16 professional seasons. He got the start in 149 of his 228 career regular-season appearances, piling up 935 tackles, 90 pass defenses, 30 interceptions, 16 fumble recoveries, 13 forced fumbles and six sacks. Adams had a late peak in 2014 and 2015 for the Colts, picking off five passes and earning a Pro Bowl nod in both seasons.

The Texans are struggling defensively, as they've allowed 259 passing yards per game (ranked 20th) and 114 rushing yards per game (16th) through four games. Adams, who turned 38 years old in March, provides a veteran presence to complement safeties Justin Reid and Tashaun Gipson. He was a starter for the Panthers last year, registering 75 tackles, six pass breakups and three interceptions. It's unclear how much he'll play for the Texans, but it looks like he could fill in as a nickel safety.

Panthers' Mike Adams: Won't stay with Panthers
Adams will not re-sign with the Panthers, Joe Person of The Athletic reports.
Adams was a 16-game starter the past two seasons in Carolina, averaging 72 tackles, eight passes defensed and 2.5 interceptions, though he struggled in coverage during the 2018 campaign. The Panthers hope to get younger and faster on defense, albeit without an obvious replacement on the roster to start alongside Eric Reid at safety. The team may look to the draft to address its deficiency, while Adams will hit the open market in mid-March shortly before he celebrates his 38th birthday. He has already announced his intention to continue playing football for at least one more season.

Panthers' Mike Adams: Another productive campaign
Adams finished the 2018 regular season with 75 tackles (47 solo) and three interceptions on six passes defended in 16 games played.
Adams remains a productive player despite being 37 years old, as he's now topped 60 tackles in all but four of his 15 seasons. That includes eight straight campaigns with that achievement, which should result in interest in him as he becomes a free agent this offseason. The veteran ranked fourth on the Panthers in tackles, trailing only linebackers Luke Kuechly, Thomas Davis and Shaq Thompson.
