  • Spencer Brown: Cut by Carolina

The Panthers are slated to waive Brown on Tuesday, Joe Person of The Athletic reports.

Brown put together a solid preseason with Carolina, so he could resurface on the practice squad as long as he clears waivers. The team has expressed continued confidence that Miles Sanders (groin) will be ready for Week 1, but Chuba Hubbard and Raheem Blackshear are the only backs remaining on the roster should he have a setback.

  • Panthers' Spencer Brown: Double-digit carries in loss

Brown carried the ball 10 times for 26 yards and caught his only target for seven yards in Friday's preseason loss to the Giants.

With Miles Sanders (groin) unavailable, Chuba Hubbard got the start in the backfield but left early in the second quarter with an ankle injury. Brown was the second Carolina running back to see action on offense, and his 33 scrimmage yards just out-paced Raheem Blackshear's 31 rushing yards, although the latter scored a touchdown in the second half. Should the injuries to Sanders and Hubbard linger into the regular season, it's not yet clear whether Blackshear or Brown would assume lead duties.

  • Panthers' Spencer Brown: Leads team in carries

Brown rushed eight times for 34 yards in Saturday's 27-0 preseason loss to the Jets. He also caught all three of his targets for four yards.

Brown entered the game after Chuba Hubbard started in place of Miles Sanders, who was sidelined with a groin injury. While Sanders could feature in a three-down role this season, Hubbard is slated to be Carolina's second-stringer, likely leaving Brown to compete with Raheem Blackshear for third on the depth chart, albeit without the added special-teams value Blackshear has. Despite gaining just six yards on his three offensive touches Saturday, Blackshear returned two kickoffs for 37 yards and one punt for 10 more.

  • Panthers' Spencer Brown: Heads back to practice squad

Brown was called up to the Panthers' active roster for both Weeks 8 and 9, and he totaled nine carries for 43 yards while also nabbing two catches on three targets for 10 yards over the two contests. With Chuba Hubbard (ankle) unavailable, the 23-year-old ranked third among Carolina ball carriers with 13 offensive snaps in Sunday's Week 9 loss to the Bengals. Brown rushed three times for 16 yards and caught two of three targets for 10 yards in Sunday's 42-21 loss to the Bengals.

Brown and Raheem Blackshear featured behind starting tailback D'Onta Foreman. Of the trio, it was the rookie Blackshear who was most productive, totaling 53 yards and a touchdown on nine touches.
