  • Saints' Chase Young: Facing uncertainty with neck

Young's one-year contract with the Saints gives New Orleans protection in the event he struggles to recover from his upcoming neck surgery or otherwise misses time, with 61 percent of the money in the deal coming from per-game roster bonuses, Matthew Paras of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.

Young has a $5.01 million base salary and can earn an additional $7.99 million in per-game roster bonuses, with the former guaranteed at signing and the latter only guaranteed if he's released. In other words, he'll miss out on around $470,000 for each game he's on the roster but inactive. Albert Breer of SI.com reports that scans on Young's neck led to reduced interest in free agency, due to a condition that was first discovered last summer after he suffered a stinger in the preseason. He ended up playing seven games for the Commanders, and then 12 post-trade for the 49ers (including playoffs), recording 7.5 sacks in the regular season and an additional sack during the postseason. Young was the No. 2 overall pick and Defensive Rookie of the Year back in 2020, but he suffered a severe knee injury the following season and managed only 1.5 sacks in 12 appearances between 2021 and 2022. He's scheduled for surgery Thursday and expected to be healthy for training camp, at which point the Saints likely will use him off the bench behind starting defensive ends Cameron Jordan and Carl Granderson.

  • Saints' Chase Young: In line for neck surgery

Young is slated to undergo neck surgery that will keep him sidelined until at least training camp, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

On the heels of signing a one-year, $13 million contract with the Saints on Monday, Young now will address an injury that may stem from the stinger that he suffered back in the 2023 preseason and resulted in him being inactive for Week 1. The No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 Draft, he spent the first three and a half seasons of his career with Washington before landing with the 49ers at the trade deadline in October. Young has 16.5 sacks among his 100 tackles in 43 career contests.

  • Saints' Chase Young: Officially joins New Orleans

The Saints and Young agreed to a contract Monday.

According to Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com, Young's new deal will be for one year. The No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 Draft, Young earned Defensive Rookie of the Year honors to kick off his career, but his next two seasons were derailed by injuries, and he split 2023 between the Commanders and 49ers. With 16.5 sacks in 43 games in his first four campaigns, he'll be a part of a New Orleans pass rush that features Cameron Jordan and Carl Granderson.

  • Chase Young: Looks set to sign with New Orleans

Young is expected to sign a contract with the Saints after visiting with the team Monday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Young, the No. 2 overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft and former Defensive Rookie of the Year, was acquired by the 49ers prior to last season's trade deadline. He tallied 2.5 sacks across nine regular-season games with San Francisco but was allowed to walk in free agency, where it looks like he'll get a fresh start in New Orleans. Young looks to finally be back in top form after knee issues significantly hampered him in 2021 and 2022, and it would be an ideal situation for him to pair with (and learn from) veteran defensive end Cameron Jordan with the Saints.
