Texans' Irv Smith: Returning to Houston
The Texans signed Smith to a one-year contract Friday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Smith hooked on with Houston's practice squad last September and ended up getting signed to the team's active roster in December. The veteran tight end played in five total regular-season games and didn't see a target on offense, though he did catch one pass for two yards in the Texans' playoff loss to Kansas City. Smith figures to again be buried on Houston's depth chart when the team's tight-end corps is healthy, though Brevin Jordan is recovering from a torn ACL and Cade Stover fractured his collarbone in the team's wild-card win against the Chargers in January.

Texans' Irv Smith: One catch in playoff loss
Smith caught his lone target for two yards in Saturday's 23-14 divisional-round playoff loss to the Chiefs.
Smith moved up the depth chart after Houston placed Cade Stover (collarbone) on injured reserve. Smith was a late-season addition to the active roster, as the Texans dealt with long-term and ephemeral injuries at the position, and was never targeted during the regular season. He enters the offseason as an unrestricted free agent.

Texans' Irv Smith: Works as third tight end
Smith went untargeted in Saturday's 32-12 win over the Chargers in the wild-card round.
Smith was on the active roster and worked as the third tight end as Teagan Quitoriano (calf) was held out of the opening round of the playoffs. The latter was designated to return last week and could replace Smith for this weekend's divisional-round matchup against Kansas City. After being released from the Chiefs' practice squad in September, Smith was scooped up by Houston and eventually elevated to its 53-man roster. He wasn't targeted over five regular-season appearances, and the 26-year-old will enter the offseason as an unrestricted free agent.

Texans' Irv Smith: Signs to active roster
The Texans signed Smith to their active roster Friday.
Smith, a 2019 second-round pick from Alabama, has already played in two games with the Texans this season, failing to record a stat across 48 total snaps (39 offensive and nine on special teams). He's expected to serve as Houston's No. 2 tight end in Saturday's matchup against the Chiefs, playing behind Dalton Schultz.

Irv Smith: Reverts to practice squad
Smith reverted to Houston's practice squad Monday.
Smith was elevated for the second straight week since Cade Stover (appendix) was out and Teagan Quitoriano (knee) remains on injured reserve, but he once again failed to record any stats. Smith could be called up for the team's Week 16 matchup versus the Chiefs if Stover remains sidelined.

Texans' Irv Smith: Promoted from practice squad
Smith has been elevated from the practice squad Saturday ahead of Sunday's game against the Dolphins, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
This is the second time Smith has been elevated from the practice squad to the active roster, as he logged 22 snaps (17 on offense, five on special teams) in Week 13 against the Jaguars. Smith is expected to operate as Houston's No. 3 tight end in this Week 15 contest behind Dalton Schultz and Cade Stover.

Irv Smith: Back to practice squad
Smith reverted to the Texans' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
Week 13 was the first time Smith was elevated to the Texans' active roster this season as he took over for Teagon Quitoriano (knee) as the No. 3 tight end behind Dalton Schultz and Cade Stover. Smith played 22 snaps (17 on offense, five on special teams) and did not show up on the box score in Sunday's 23-20 win over the Jaguars. The 2019 second-round pick is eligible to be elevated from Houston's practice squad two more times this season.

Texans' Irv Smith: Makes Texans debut
Smith was not targeted over 17 snaps in Sunday's 23-20 win over Jacksonville in Week 13.
Smith was elevated from the practice squad to take over for the injured Teagan Quitoriano (knee) as the third tight end. Smith experienced a modest level of success in three seasons with the Vikings and one with the Bengals, but he'll remain firmly entrenched behind Dalton Schultz and Cade Stover.

Texans' Irv Smith: Gets elevation for Week 13
Smith was elevated from the Texans' practice squad Saturday ahead of Sunday's matchup versus Jacksonville, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Smith's elevation will be his first of the campaign. The veteran tight end played for the Bengals last season, recording 18 catches for 115 yards and one touchdown over 12 regular-season games. Smith will work as Houston's No. 3 tight end Sunday following the placement of Teagan Quitoriano (knee) on IR on Thursday.

Irv Smith: Joins Texans' practice squad
Houston signed Smith to its practice squad Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Smith played in 12 games with Cincinnati in 2023, but he wasn't able to stick on a 53-man roster ahead of the 2024 season. Now he'll likely get a chance to make an impression with the Texans, especially with Dalton Schultz dealing with an ankle injury and both Brevin Jordan (knee) and Dalton Keene (knee) on injured reserve.

Irv Smith: Released by Kansas City
Kansas City released Smith on Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
The 2019 second-round pick was a healthy scratch for the Bengals by the end of last season and now finds himself unable to earn a spot on Kansas City's initial 53-man roster. Smith is only 26 years old but may struggle to stick around the league as anything more than a practice squad player.

Chiefs' Irv Smith: Impressing at camp
Smith has worked with Kansas City's first-team offense during camp and has been a pleasant surprise for the coaching staff, Pete Sweeney of ArrowheadPride.com reports.
Smith disappointed in 2023, as he wasn't able to take hold of the top spot on Cincinnati's depth chart at tight end and finished with just 18 catches for 115 yards and one touchdown across 12 games. He seems to be making a good first impression in Kansas City, as he's proving to be a reliable target in practices on the occasions he's filled in for Travis Kelce on the first-team offense. He's got a real chance to make the Chiefs' 53-man roster and is likely competing with Noah Gray and Jared Wiley for a depth role in the team's tight end room.

Chiefs' Irv Smith: Joining Super Bowl champs
Smith is in line to sign a one-year deal with Kansas City, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Smith was limited to 18 catches on 26 targets for 115 yards and one TD over 12 regular-season games with the Bengals last season, but the 2019 second-rounder does have some bounce-back potential as a pass-catcher. As long as top tight end Travis Kelce is healthy though, Smith doesn't have a path to steady target volume with Kansas City.
