Toussaint appeared in 27 games with the Steelers throughout the past three seasons, but logged no more than 46 offensive snaps during any of those campaigns. He visited the Colts on Sunday, but other teams could come calling for the veteran running back as well.

Steelers' Fitzgerald Toussaint: Works with first team Sunday
Toussaint took first-team snaps during Sunday's practice, Joe Rutten of TribLive.com reports.
With both James Conner (groin) and Steven Ridley (rest) held out of the team drills portion of Sunday's practice, Toussaint had the opportunity to get some extended run. The re-signing of Ridley this offseason leaves Toussaint's place on the Steelers' roster in question, but the fact he's directly behind both running backs in the pecking order shows the veteran still has a legitimate chance of surviving final cuts in a couple weeks.

Steelers' Fitzgerald Toussaint: Back with Steelers
Toussaint will re-sign with the Steelers, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
Toussaint will reprise his role as a depth option behind star back Le'Veon Bell and 2017 third-rounder James Conner. In limited work with the Steelers last season, Toussaint carried six times for 25 yards and added two catches for nine yards, while suiting up for six games.

Toussaint, who ran for 22 yards on five carries, and caught two passes (on three targets) for nine yards in Sunday's win over the Browns, finishes up the 2017 season with 25 yards on six carries and the two receptions in six games.
Toussaint added 35 yards on two kick returns, giving him 94 yards on six kick returns. An unrestricted free agent, he may be challenged for a roster spot next season by Stevan Ridley.

Steelers' Fitzgerald Toussaint: Likely to see more snaps in Week 17
Toussaint is expected to handle more snaps than usual in Sunday's game against the Browns with the Steelers preparing to rest Le'Veon Bell for the contest, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Bell could still dress for the Week 17 game given that the team only has three healthy tailbacks on the roster, but the Steelers' reluctance to expose him to injury heading into the postseason will likely leave either Stevan Ridley or Toussaint on hand to absorb all of the touches out of the backfield. After earning nine carries to Toussaint's zero in the 34-6 win over the Texans in Week 16, Ridley looks positioned to see the larger portion of the workload, but Toussaint should see an enhanced opportunity nonetheless. Expect most of the snaps Toussaint receives to come on clear passing downs or when Ridley needs a breather.

Steelers' Fitzgerald Toussaint: Signed from practice squad
The Steelers signed Toussaint off their practice squad Saturday, Adam Caplan of SiriusXM Radio reports.
Toussaint has shown pass-catching ability in stints with the Steelers both of the past two seasons, but he was waived in training camp after losing out on a third-string running back gig. Though he'll take the spot of fellow back Terrell Watson on the 53-man roster, Toussaint won't see many opportunities on offense while Le'Veon Bell and James Conner are both healthy. Instead, he'll likely see most of his action as a kick returner and as a member of the Steelers' kick-coverage units.

Toussaint was released on Saturday after being buried on the team's running back depth chart, but he'll remain with the organization. Given his versatile skill set, Toussaint is a good tailback for Pittsburgh to keep around in case star Le'Veon Bell goes down with an injury at any point this season.

This comes as a minor surprise, considering the Steelers are left with two power backs (James Conner and Terrell Watson) behind starter Le'Veon Bell. Toussaint's pass-catching ability would come in handy in the event of a Bell injury, but it seems Watson made a strong impression with his powerful running during the preseason. The Steelers likely will check in on Toussaint if anything happens to Bell during the season. There hasn't been anything to suggest Toussaint's leg injury is serious.

Toussaint had one reception for three yards against Indianapolis on Saturday before exiting with a left leg injury.
Knile Davis got the start, with Toussaint having to wait until Pittsburgh's fourth offensive possession before seeing his only touch of the game. Le'Veon Bell (groin) and rookie James Conner are 1-2 respectively on the depth chart, with Toussaint, Davis, Terrell Watson and Trey Williams all competing for roster spots. If Toussaint is cleared, each running back should have one final opportunity to impress head coach Mike Tomlin in the final preseason game Thursday against Carolina.

Toussaint got the start in Friday's preseason opener against the Giants, rushing six times for 19 yards and failing to haul in his lone target.
Toussaint played the whole first quarter, but was outperformed by both Knile Davis and Terrell Watson. If he can hold both of them and James Conner off during the preseason, the 27-year-old running back out of Michigan will be one Le'Veon Bell injury away from the starting job.

Steelers' Fitzgerald Toussaint: Listed as first-team back
With Le'Veon Bell not in camp and James Conner banged up, Toussaint sits atop the Steelers' initial depth chart posted on the team's official site.
Once healthy, Conner, who is listed among the Steelers "not participating" in practice, is slated to compete with Toussaint for the right to back up Bell, the team's undisputed starter. Even when Bell reports to the team, his track record of missing games suggests that whomever wins the top backup role would have high insurance value. If Conner can get healthy soon, it's not hard to imagine him overtaking Toussaint, thus making him a strong fantasy handcuff option.
