  • Browns' Rodney McLeod: Starting Week 1

McLeod will start Sunday's matchup against the Bengals, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

With Juan Thornhill (calf) inactive, McLeod will garner an increased role in the season opener. McLeod has been a full-time starter for multiple teams during his 10-year career and should provide a stabilizing presence to Cleveland's secondary versus Joe Burrow and company. Last year, McLeod recorded a career-high 96 tackles across 17 appearances with the Colts. He added eight pass defenses, two interceptions and one fumble recovery.

  • Browns' Rodney McLeod: Headed for Cleveland

McLeod has agreed to terms with the Browns, Jake Trotter of ESPN reports.

McLeod spent the 2022 season with the Colts, where he posted career highs with 96 tackles and eight passes defended. Per Trotter, the 32-year-old projects to fill a key backup role in the Browns secondary behind expected starting safeties Grant Delpit and Juan Thornhill. McLeod, who has the versatility to play either strong or free safety, previously played under new Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz while the two were in Philadelphia.

  • Colts' Rodney McLeod: Posts career highs in 2022

Over 17 appearances, McLeod logged 96 tackles (59 solo) and eight passes defended, including two interceptions, as well as a fumble recovery during the 2022 campaign.

McLeod emerged into a starting role three games into his first year with the Colts. The 32-year-old safety, who spent the previous six seasons with Philadelphia, also appeared in every regular-season contest for the first time since the 2019 campaign. As a result, he posted career highs in tackles and passes defended to go along with the third pick-six of his career. McLeod played on a one-year, $1.77 million contract with Indianapolis this season, so he's now set to become an unrestricted free agent again this offseason.

  • Colts' Rodney McLeod: Moves into starting role

McLeod started at strong safety and had five total tackles, two passes defensed and an interception in Sunday's win over Kansas City.

McLeod played on all 59 of the defense's snaps as he got increased playing time with rookie Nick Cross moving back to the bench (just one snap on defense). It looks like McLeod has a starting role and should continue to get plenty of snaps with Julian Blackmon possibly missing time with a sprained ankle.

  • Colts' Rodney McLeod: Mostly limited to special teams

McLeod did not record a tackle and played just two snaps on defense in Sunday's tie at Houston.

McLeod also logged 18 snaps on special teams. It was somewhat surprising that McLeod was mostly limited to special teams, as it was thought he'd initially get some time in place of rookie Nick Cross at strong safety. It looks like the Colts are confident in Cross or don't plan to utilize many three-safety sets.
