Bears' Zach Miller: Retires from NFL
Miller (knee) announced his retirement from football Tuesday, Jeff Dickerson of ESPN.com reports.
Miller required nine surgeries after his devastating October 2017 injury, nearly losing his left leg after a dislocated kneecap ruptured an artery. Doctors were able to save the leg and help him walk again, but a return to football was too much to ask. The 34-year-old tight end retires with 146 catches for 1,631 yards and 15 touchdowns in 66 NFL games, highlighted by back-to-back seasons with more than 400 yards in 2015 and 2016.

Miller suffered a career-threatening injury in October 2017, requiring nine surgeries after a dislocated kneecap ruptured an artery in his left leg. Bears' Zach Miller: Remains under Chicago control
Miller is under contract with the Bears on a one-year, $645,000 contract in 2019, Aaron Leming of 247Sports reports.
There hasn't been news of Miller re-upping with Chicago, but it's possible a clause in the one-year contract the tight end signed last offseason may have kept him under Bears control for another year Recovering from an extremely severe knee injury, Miller still has a long way to go before returning to the football but will seemingly be able to work out at the Bears' facility in the meantime.

Miller (knee) was seen jogging in a recent feature on Fox Sports.
Miller still has many steps to go in his path to recovery, but the tight end seems committed to making a return to the field. His progress to date is remarkable in itself, considering Miller wasn't guaranteed to walk again after severely dislocating his left knee in October of 2017.

Miller (knee) believes that he's close to gaining clearance to run again, Jeff Dickerson of ESPN.com reports.
After Miller dislocated his left knee on Oct. 29 of last year, there was worry that he may have to have his leg amputated. Nine surgeries and a year of rehab later, he has thoughts of taking a step doctors didn't think was possible. What may not be possible is a return to football for the 34-year-old tight end, but considering where he currently stands in his recovery Miller may get over that hurdle as well.

Bears' Zach Miller: Season officially over
Miller (knee) was placed on the Reserve/PUP list on Tuesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
By being placed on the Reserve/PUP list, Miller's season is officially over, but the Bears reportedly knew that the tight end would be unable to play when they re-signed him Monday. In fact, Miller may never be able to play in the NFL again after rupturing an artery in his left leg last season. Miller will ultimately revert to injured reserve once the regular season is underway.

Bears' Zach Miller: Rejoins Chicago on one-year deal
Miller (knee) agreed Monday with the Bears on a one-year, $458,000 contract, Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune reports.
It's still very possible Miller's NFL career is over after he ruptured an artery in his left leg Oct. 29 that required nine different emergency surgeries and an extended hospital stay, but the Bears at least appear prepared to give the tight end an opportunity to prove he's still capable of playing. Miller, who resumed walking without the aid of crutches in March, said his left knee is stable, but he's still working to rebuild muscle and may have been robbed of some athleticism as a result of the procedures. He'll likely open training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list and shift to injured reserve if he fails to demonstrate substantial progress prior to the start of the season.

Bears' Zach Miller: Holding out hope
Miller (knee) said he hopes to play football again, Phil Thompson of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Miller also said his knee is now "stable" after undergoing nine surgeries on his left leg in the last three months, which included a procedure to repair his PCL and LCL in addition to the ruptured popliteal artery that prevented blood from reaching his lower leg. However, there's no guarantee he'll ever return to the field again, let alone for the 2018 season. Miller's currently waiting for his knee to "heal enough to start rehabilitation" and is without any sort of timeline for recovery.

Bears' Zach Miller: Officially moves to IR
The Bears placed Miller (knee) on injured reserve Tuesday, Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Miller's move to IR is merely a formality after the tight end suffered a likely career-ending injury in the Bears' last game Oct. 29 against the Saints. While the vascular surgery Miller required to preserve his left leg was successful and he was cleared to head back to Chicago earlier this week, he's still set to undergo additional surgeries to repair the ligaments in his leg. The Bears signed fellow tight end Ben Braunecker from their practice squad to take Miller's spot on the 53-man roster.

Bears' Zach Miller: Cleared to return to Chicago
Miller was discharged from a New Orleans hospital Monday and cleared to fly back to the Chicago area, Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Miller required emergency vascular surgery to repair a torn artery in his left leg after dislocating his knee in the Bears' Oct. 29 loss to the Saints, with doctors holding him in New Orleans the past week to oversee his healing. With the procedure deemed successful, Miller will be able to return home, where he'll continue to receive additional medical care. It's expected that Miller will need more surgeries to address torn ligaments in his leg, making it more likely than not that the 33-year-old's career is over.

Bears' Zach Miller: On tap for follow-up MRI
Miller is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday to evaluate the blood flow and anatomy of his injured left leg, which required vascular surgery following his departure from Sunday's 20-12 loss to the Saints, Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports.
Miller suffered a severe dislocation of his left knee after he landed awkwardly on the leg while snagging a touchdown pass that was later overturned upon further review. He was later diagnosed with arterial damage to his leg, necessitating an emergency operation in New Orleans to preserve the limb. It remains to be seen if the procedure was successful, but the MRI should shed more light on that front.

The Bears announced Monday that the emergency vascular surgery Miller (knee) underwent to repair a torn artery in New Orleans on Sunday was successful.
Miller remains hospitalized in New Orleans and is set to receive further evaluation, but the news that his surgery was successful should come as a welcome relief for the tight end, who had been at risk of having his left leg amputated after severely dislocating his knee in Sunday's loss to the Saints. Follow-up examinations should provide more information on the extent of Miller's setback, but his 2017 season is almost certainly over, and the injury could put his career in jeopardy. The 33-year-old Miller, who has caught 20 passes for 236 yards and two touchdowns over eight games on the season, had previously been sidelined for a three-year stretch from 2012 to 2014 due to injury.

Bears' Zach Miller: Receiving surgery to address artery damage
Miller, who dislocated his left knee in Sunday's 20-12 loss to the Saints, underwent urgent vascular surgery following the contest to address artery damage, Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports.
Miller's injury certainly looked to be a season-ending one given the gruesome way in which the leg bent on an unsuccessful touchdown catch in the third quarter, but Mortensen relays that the tight end's situation is even "more significant" than initially believed. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Miller's knee was dislocated so far out of its normal position that he tore an artery, which required vascular surgeons to preside over his operation. At this point, doctors are hopeful to preserve Miller's leg first and foremost rather than merely allowing him to continue his playing career. The 33-year-old has hauled in 20 passes for 236 yards and two touchdowns in eight games on the season.
