Through two preseason games, wide receiver Trindon Holliday has been the most intriguing story for the Houston Texans.

Houston beat San Francisco 20-9 Saturday night, and Holliday returned a punt 87 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter, his second straight game with a special teams touchdown.

So far this preseason, Holliday has averaged 18.4 yards per punt return and 44 yards per kickoff return. Holliday returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown against the Panthers last Saturday.

Coach Gary Kubiak has been noncommittal about whether Holliday could make the team only contributing on special teams, but after the first two preseason games, Holliday has made a very strong case to be included on the 53-man roster.

“Can you make the team as just a returner? Yeah,” Kubiak told reporters earlier this week. “You better be special, though.”

So far, Holliday has been pretty special.

WR Jean has a nice night: Wide receiver Lestar Jean caught four passes for 42 yards and had the game’s only offensive touchdown, a 9-yard catch and run from quarterback Matt Schaub in the second quarter. This from Nick Scurfield of HoustonTexans.com:

Jean continues to battle rookies Keshawn Martin and DeVier Posey for the third wide receiver spot behind Andre Johnson and Kevin Walter. Martin had three catches for 36 yards against the 49ers while Posey did not have a catch.

K Graham steps up in kicking battle: Veteran kicker Shayne Graham looked to get a leg up Saturday in the field goal kicking battle with rookie Randy Bullock. Graham made both of his field goal attempts, the first from 48 yards and the second from 49 yards. Bullock, meanwhile, missed his only attempt from 51 yards.

WR Johnson, LB Cushing make preseason debuts: Andre Johnson and Brian Cushing made their preseason debuts Saturday. Johnson played well in limited time, catching two passes for 49 yards. He hauled in a 43-yard pass from Schaub in the second quarter, going up and winning the ball against two 49ers defensive backs.

Cushing had three tackles but had to go to the locker room in the second quarter. He told Scurfield his ribs were sore.
