Colts owner Jim Irsay has been throwing chum into the Twitter waters the past few days, speculating that his team was about to complete a major transaction.

He’s kept it up on Twitter ever since, continuing to talk up the possibility of a trade, even while CBSSports.com’s Mike Freeman reported that other league executives were saying that Irsay was hurting his team with those hints.

Turns out, Irsay wasn’t lying, as CBSSports.com’s Jason La Canfora is reporting that the Colts have traded a second-round pick and a conditional late-round selection (reportedly a sixth-round pick) for Dolphins cornerback Vontae Davis.

It’s an interesting move for the Colts, who could use a definite upgrade in the secondary. Meanwhile, the Dolphins seemingly had moved free-agent acquisition Richard Marshall into Davis’ starting spot.

Rapid Reporter Dave Carey also noted that the team also reportedly is high on backup cornerback Nolan Carroll.

Plus, if “Hard Knocks” was any indication, Davis was having a rough preseason. On the first episode, he complained about how tired he was while running drills, and that led to multiple conversations with coaches about how Davis should be playing better.

It also led head coach Joe Philbin to rip Davis for having a tiny bladder (Davis used the bathroom multiple times during practice, quite possibly so he could have some extra rest).

Once he fell out of favor with the Dolphins, the Colts became very aggressive, coveting his size and skills and seeing him as the type of corner perfectly suited to Chuck Pagano's style of defense.

This moment is a far cry from last August when Davis said this about himself and Sean Smith: "I’m going to go out on a limb and say we’re the best [cornerback] tandem in the league. You name them all and I’m putting it out there.”

It was a statement that was laughable then and sort of sad today.

All of which lead Smith to tweet the following:
