It’s apparently been quite a turnaround in the past day or so for 49ers quarterback Colt McCoy.
Soon after there was a report that McCoy could be released if San Francisco couldn’t find a trade partner, coach Jim Harbaugh actually announced McCoy as the backup to Colin Kaepernick.
Instead of finding himself unemployed, McCoy now will have to be ready to take the field at a moment’s notice.
On Saturday, McCoy agreed to take a paycut to $630,000 on his original salary of $1.5 million, but on Sunday, he completed 11 of 15 passes for 109 yards and an interception in the preseason contest vs. the Vikings. Afterward, Harbaugh decided he had seen enough to make him the backup.
"It really happened quick," McCoy said, via CSN Bay Area. "This is a tremendous team. It's well-coached. It's a great organization from top to bottom.”
The team also had signed Seneca Wallace to a one-year deal late last week, and it appears that he’ll compete against B.J. Daniels and Scott Tolzien for the No. 3 quarterback role. But now that McCoy has his spot solidified, he can relax a little.
"Jim and I had a great week. We talked and we met a lot," McCoy said. "Between us, I think we figured each other out a lot better.”
