Falcons vs. Panthers score, takeaways: Carolina swallows up Marcus Mariota, Atlanta in ugly NFC South contest

The Falcons came into Charlotte on Thursday night looking to retake the NFC South lead. Instead, they left dampened and defeated, not only by the rainy remnants of Hurricane Nicole, but their rival Panthers. Neither side was particularly inspiring in such sloppy conditions, but whereas Arthur Smith's offense failed until the waning minutes, with Marcus Mariota practically begging Desmond Ridder to replace him on every other downfield heave, Carolina actually showed spurts of life under interim coach Steve Wilks, riding a 100-yard night from D'Onta Foreman, plus a ferocious performance from their defensive line, to seal a 25-15 victory.

The Panthers improve to 3-7 with the win, and 2-3 since Wilks replaced Matt Rhule on the sidelines. P.J. Walker reprised his starting role under center for the victory, though he stayed in the background as Carolina leaned on the run. Mariota, meanwhile, inexplicably aired it out more than usual for Atlanta, taking a number of ill-advised deep shots as the Falcons fell to 4-6, behind the Buccaneers in the South.

Here are some additional takeaways from Thursday night's divisional contest:

Why the Panthers won

They played exactly the type of football you're supposed to play when hurricane rains invade the action. D'Onta Foreman was the definition of a workhorse despite Chuba Hubbard's return from injury, and he handled 31 carries like a pro, always moving forward and finishing with 130 yards and a hard-earned score. His clock-churning efforts took the burden off P.J. Walker, who was spotty early but settled in as a background shepherd of the offense. Steve Wilks' defense was the real winner, though, getting after Marcus Mariota all night. On a relatively quiet evening for Brian Burns, everyone else feasted, with Shaq Thompson, Derrick Brown, Frankie Luv and Marquis Haynes combining for four sacks and nine tackles for loss. That entire unit played with confidence, using the weather to its advantage, and headlined the close win on a short week.

Why the Falcons lost

Younghoe Koo missed two extra points in the rain -- a first for him in his prestigious young career -- but Atlanta's issues went way beyond special teams. The chief issue: Arthur Smith's offense, which refused to utilize Cordarrelle Patterson early, inexplicably went heavier on the pass in the rain, and got one of Mariota's worst performances in a season full of iffy outings. The QB showed fight late, pulling the game within a score, but only after throwing a bad interception (and at least three other would-be picks) while forcing off-mark throws to the perpetually underused Kyle Pitts. Atlanta's "D" eventually wore down against the run, also permitting a big Laviska Shenault TD on a swing pass, but this was mostly a case of Smith's group failing when it mattered most, finishing just 3 of 13 on third- or fourth-down plays.

Turning point

Up 13-9 in the third quarter, the Panthers had just allowed the Falcons to pull close with a Mariota TD pass to Drake London. But then, two plays into the subsequent series, Carolina gained 43 yards on a short pass to Terrace Marshall Jr., who shed several tackles to push the Panthers all the way inside Atlanta's 40. From there, Wilks' squad pounded it forward, sealing the drive with a 13-yard scoring run from Foreman to confirm their lead for good.

Play of the game

The Panthers showed early they could make Mariota uncomfortable, and that was never more clear than when pressure forced the Falcons QB to roll left, out of the pocket, and then hurl it deep -- into the waiting arms of Jaycee Horn:

What's next

The Panthers (3-7) will hit the road in Week 11 to face the Ravens (6-3), who are on their bye after routing the Saints in prime time. The Falcons (4-6), meanwhile, will return home to host the Bears (3-6), who play the Lions this weekend.

Panthers have been motioning Shenault all night, mostly as a decoy, but here he gets a good block from D.J. Moore to race untouched into the end zone for the score. It's 10-0 Panthers, and Shenault is tied with Moore for offensive touches in this first half.

WOW Laviska Shenault! The former Jaguar! 41 yards on the swing pass to the house! Kid has some speed!

Falcons had to operate with their backs to their own end zone on that drive, and they record the first three-and-out of the night. Actually surprising we made it this far without one! Three straight Allgeier runs for nine yards. Nothing going. Arthur Smith needs to address something

153 total yards in this one. 11 first downs. This is NFC South football.

Carolina drive finally dies at 15 plays, 56 yards. Just 15 yards from the red zone. Panthers averaging 4.2 yards per play, but P.J. Walker has just 36 passing yards. D'Onta Foreman up to 43 yards on 10 carries.

Panthers have had the ball for 13:06 already. Fast moving game, but feels so slow.

Didn't think the Panthers would be outgaining the Falcons by 58 yards through 19 minutes tonight, but here we are. Two possessions that have lasted 10+ plays.

Wow, both Panthers' drives tonight have gone 10 plays.

Falcons now have four penalties (two declined) on the night. Hell, they had a holding on the opening kickoff. Arthur Smith throwing out F bombs everywhere. Understandable.

Atlanta punts for the second time in two drives after gaining 24 yards on eight plays.

Derrick Brown has been so much better this season. 42 combined tackles, 1 sack, career-high 6 passes defensed. He was criticized coming into the league since he was a No. 7 overall pick as a DT. But he's athletic and disruptive all over the field. He told me in April of 2020 he knows he can be one of the best.

"I've been doubted all my life, man. I just take it with a grain of salt. I'm hearing all the criticisms, I've seen it all. I just take it and at the end of the day it's how I come back so it doesn't really matter."

Another Kyle Pitts target wiped out by a penalty up front. Mariota escapes pressure, rolls right and delivers a tight one to his tight end, who makes the grab, but it's for naught. Then Mariota just hurls it up into triple coverage toward the end zone on the next play, also flagged. Sloppy stuff.

Good and bad from P.J. Walker early on, as Jordan alluded to. Really liked the touch he had on a sideline throw to D.J. Moore during Carolina's last time out, especially with some pressure in his face. But then, locked into Moore on a deep shot to the end zone, he failed to be patient and let other reads enter his vision, missing a chance to give the Panthers a red-zone trip.

10 plays, 41 yards for the Panthers on that first possession. Both good and bad. PJ Walker confuses me a lot of the time. Either way, three points.

Eddy Piniero -- who struggled Sunday -- hit a 46-yard FG -- but barely made it as the ball hit the left crossbar and went through. Piniero missed an extra point and a FG five days ago.

Falcons go 9 yards on 6 plays on their first drive of the game. Panthers LB Shaq Thompson was the star of that possession. Two stops for negative yardage. Interested to see if PJ Walker can rebound after last week, or if he struggles yet again.

Pitts two targets on the first two "plays" of the game. That's interesting to me. First target didn't count since the new father Jake Matthews was downfield.

I really expect the Falcons to pound the ball down the Panthers throats tonight. Atlanta ran for 167 in the first meeting two weeks ago.

IT'S GAME TIME. And it looks like it's pouring rain. Before we get going, here's my SGP:

D'Onta Foreman 45+ rushing yards
Falcons Under 32.5 pts
Panthers Under 29.5 pts

Believe it or not, that's -125! Good value.

Also sprinkled on Falcons and Panthers defenses for first TD of the game. I understand that's aggressive but look at the weather.

Best look in the league

Last week vs the Chargers was the 4th time that Kyle Pitts been held to 2 or fewer catches this season. Good candidate for the under.

If you're a gambler like I am, the Falcons have been such a wild team to follow. They started 6-0 ATS, and are 0-3 since. My guess is they get back on track tonight, but we have some wacky weather on the road.

Marcus Mariota has thrown the 2nd highest percentage of passes off-target (17.4) this season. This is why ATL likes to run the ball as much as they do.

Walker is 1-3 as a starter for Carolina this season, and he was pulled at halftime for Mayfield during the Panthers' Week 9 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, as they quickly fell behind 35-0. Walker completed just 3 of 10 passes for nine yards and threw two interceptions in the first half. Mayfield stepped in and completed 14 of 20 passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns.

I think we have to remember that Walker's best showing of the season came against the Falcons in Week 8, as he completed 19 of 36 passes for 317 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the 37-34 overtime loss.

BUT the Panthers may be playing for the pick! The fifth-round pick they gave to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for Mayfield turns into a fourth-rounder should the quarterback play 70% of offensive snaps. Right now, Mayfield has played 61.05% of offensive snaps.

The better question regarding the QB situation for 'TNF' might be: will we see Baker Mayfield again? You can make a pretty strong case that he should be back under center after a promising outing in relief of P.J. Walker in Week 9. Obviously no option on Carolina's depth chart is a particularly good one. But Mayfield gives you the experience edge, and his arm showed more life against the Bengals. With the bad weather, however, maybe Walker won't really have to throw it much anyway.

Which QB has the better night: P.J. Walker or Marcus Mariota? Obviously both teams will likely be leaning heavily on the run, but it also feels like the kind of game where a win or loss will be determined by which signal-caller has the last blunder. Both Walker and Mariota have been among the NFL's least efficient passers. The positive spin: Walker has showcased some big-play talent in spurts; and Mariota has consistently been a threat with his legs.

Something to look for tonight:

Falcons rank top 5 in Rush YPG and Rush TD this season

Panthers rank bottom 5 in Rush YPG allowed and Rush TD allowed this season

NICOLE is rearing her ugly head in this one.

The Falcons are 4th in the NFL in rushing, with 200+ yards in 3 games -- trailing only the Bears for most in the NFL. Expect a heavy dose of Patterson and Allgeier tonight in these windy conditions.

Chuba Hubbard is active, which means I'd anticipate the Panthers getting back to more of a split in the backfield. Still safe to expect D'Onta Foreman leading the way there, not only because Hubbard is coming off injury but because Foreman brings more of a punch. But something to monitor, especially as Carolina presumably looks to keep the burden off P.J. Walker's shoulders.
