49ers vs. Lions score: San Francisco comes back from 17-point deficit to punch 2024 Super Bowl ticket

The San Francisco 49ers are heading to the Super Bowl. They punched their ticket in dramatic fashion on Sunday, overcoming a 24-7 halftime deficit to post a 34-31 win over the Detroit Lions in the NFC Championship Game.

The 49ers will now face the AFC champion Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII, which will be played on Sunday, February 11 on CBS, Nickelodeon and Paramount+.

Like an avalanche, the 49ers scored 17 unanswered points in the third quarter. One of the biggest plays during that span was Brandon Aiyuk's incredible, 51-yard catch off a Lions defender's helmet that set up his own touchdown catch. It was one of five consecutive scoring drives by the 49ers, who received big second half efforts from Ayuik, Brock Purdy, Christian McCaffrey, and Deebo Samuel, among others.

The Lions dominated the first half, but it was a complete different story during the second half. Detroit's first four drives in the second half resulted in two turnovers on downs, a fumble and a punt. One of the Lions' biggest miscues over that span was Jaymhr Gibbs' fumble that set up the 49ers' game-tying touchdown.

Here's a closer look at how the 49ers pulled off the incredible comeback.

Why the 49ers won

As big as the hole got in the first half, the 49ers never allowed it to become a ditch. They avoided that by forcing the Lions to settle for a field goal at the end of the first half. That was the start of their comeback.

Kyle Shanahan told Fox's Erin Andrews that the 49ers needed to open the second half with a score, and that's exactly what they did. While it wasn't a touchdown, the field goal the 49ers got on the drive made it a two-score game while giving the home team some much-needed momentum.

San Francisco's defense, after getting chewed up by the Lions' running game in the first half, then came up with a pivotal stop on fourth down on Detroit's first drive of the second half. Aiyuk's crazy catch shortly followed, and the comeback was officially on.

On offense, the comeback was fueled by Purdy, McCaffrey and Samuel. Purdy shook off a bad first half with nearly flawless play during the second half. McCaffrey dominated on the ground and finished the night with 132 total yards and two touchdowns. Samuel, like Purdy, had a quiet first half but a monster second half. His 26-yard catch on the 49ers' second play of the second half was a preview of things to come.

Defensively, the 49ers won nearly every weighty down in the second half that included two big fourth-down stops. Nick Bosa came up with two sacks and several other pressures of Jared Goff, who was clearly affected by the pressure.

Why the Lions lost

True to form, Dan Campbell coached a fearless game on Sunday, except for late in the first half with his team holding a 21-7 lead. Campbell, instead of going for it on fourth-and-goal at the 3, elected to take the three points and a 17-point halftime lead.

Not going for it then may have compelled Campbell to go for it on fourth-and-3 with 8:24 left with the Lions down, 27-24, and at the 49ers' 30-yard line. At that point, it probably made more sense to try the game-winning field goal. But the Lions went for it and came up empty when Goff was unable to connect with Josh Reynolds.

Speaking of misconnections, that, more than anything, was the reason why the Lions won't be playing in their first Super Bowl. Late in the first half, Goff missed Gibbs in the end zone on a play that should have extended Detroit's lead to 28-7. There were several similar situations in the second half where either Goff or his intended target were just off.

We also can't ignore the Lions' running game going into hibernation after halftime. Detroit rushed for just 34 yards in the second half after rumbling for 148 yards in the first half.

The offense came up short, but Detroit's defense did little to change the momentum when things started going south. They were especially bad when it came to keeping Purdy in the pocket. Purdy, not known for his mobility, made several huge plays with his legs during the 49ers' comeback.

Turning point

OK, this should probably go to Aiyuk and his jaw-dropping catch (more on that in a second). But the 49ers were still trailing at that point.

Momentum completely shifted in San Francisco's favor moments later when Tashaun Gipson and Arik Armstead collaborated on Gibbs' fumble. The 49ers turnover the turnover into a game-tying touchdown four plays later.

Play of the game

It has to be Aiyuk's incredible catch that should go down as one of the greatest receptions in playoff history. It's right up there with David Tyree's helmet grab, Lynn Swann's levitating leap and Dwight Clark's reception that is known simply "The Catch" that birthed the 49ers' 1980s dynasty.

Quotable

What's next

The 49ers will head to Las Vegas for Super Bowl LVIII, where they'll look to join the Steelers and Patriots as the only franchises to win six Super Bowls. San Francisco is also hoping to avenge its 31-20 loss to the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV.

Sunday's loss marks the end of an incredible season for the Lions, who won their first NFC North division crown before winning the franchise's first two playoff games in 32 years.

Purdy's throws to Aiyuk on both first and second down sailed high and wide. No pressure on the first one but some pressure up the middle on the second... and then he tries to throw over the middle on third down and gets picked. Seemed like he got hit as he threw the ball. But there's a penalty.

If Greenlaw goes out, it'll be either Oren Burks or Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles getting more snaps.

Dre Greenlaw appeared to injure his arm or shoulder on that big hit on Sam LaPorta on third down. Obviously something to watch as he is one of the best linebackers in the league, and his partnership with Fred Warner makes the Niners' defense what it is.

Amon-Ra St. Brown was one of only 11 players in the league with 19+ first-down receptions on third downs during the regular season. (He also missed a game due to injury.) Had a huge one on the previous set of downs but the Lions then stalled out after the Nick Bosa sack.

Lions tried another trick play to use the 49ers' aggressiveness against them. Jared Goff just didn't have enough time to really step into the throw and hit Josh Reynolds down the field for what would have been a long touchdown.

The Niners made quick work of that drive. 8 plays, 75 yards, TD in just 3:45. McCaffrey had 43 yards and the score on 5 touches.

CMC just stiff-armed the heck out of CJGJ and gained a ton of yards after the catch. Huge play.

Not all that much room to run just yet for Christian McCaffrey, but the Niners seem intent on running it anyway. He has just 28 yards on 8 carries. Brock Purdy's 8 pass attempts, meanwhile, have netted 60 yards. (And that's with two of them being knocked down at the line of scrimmage.)

Deebo Samuel's got two touches already. Doesn't look like he is favoring the shoulder at all.

The Lions were averaging 9.7 yards per play before that 2-yard touchdown run. San Francisco allowed 5.0 per play (T-7th) during the regular season. Excellent offensive performance to start this game by Detroit.

Good point by Greg Olsen on the broadcast about the Lions being willing to throw short of the sticks on third downs because they know they'll go for it on fourth. Leads right into a screen to Amon-Ra St. Brown that picks up a conversion.

The Lions, meanwhile, are trying to use the aggressiveness of San Francisco's front against them. Get players out to the perimeter and use misdirection to create open space.

The 49ers are looking to test the edges of the Detroit defense so they can open things up over the middle of the field. Only moderately successful on that first drive, which ends in a missed field goal. I'd expect to see more play-action passing and downfield attacking on future drives.

The linebackers have been an area of weakness for the Lions this year, too, and now Derrick Barnes goes down. Expect to see more of Jack Campbell and Malcolm Rodriguez in addition to Alex Anzalone.

Brandon Aiyuk turned into a defensive back on that deep ball. Cam Sutton looked like the wide receiver. Purdy just threw that up for grabs; Aiyuk wasn't close to open.

Worth noting: the relative weakness of the 49ers defense is against the run. For the Lions, it's against the pass. They were very good (first in DVOA) against the run this year and average (16th) against the pass.

JAMESON WILLIAMS!!!! He was shot out of an absolute cannon on that end-around and broke multiple tackles on his way to the end zone. Wow.

David Montgomery only gained 33 yards on his 10 carries last week. He is more than halfway there on his first two tonight (19 yards).

The Lions will start with the ball here. Jared Goff and Co. against Steve Wilks' defense. Expect Detroit to be aggressive, knowing it comes into this game as an underdog. That's typically how Dan Campbell plays things in these situations.

What are the key questions each of these teams will face during the title game?

  • 49ers: Can they survive more adversity?
  • Lions: Can they keep Jared Goff clean?

Barry Sanders will serve as an honorary captain for the Lions for the NFC title game.

Sanders was in his heyday the last time the Lions made it this far. In 1991, his backbreaking touchdown in Detroit's divisional-round win over the Dallas Cowboys punched the Lions' trip toWashington. The Lions lost that game, however, and then proceeded to wait until now to get back to within a game of the Super Bowl

Deebo Samuel might actually return kicks for the Niners in this game.

"I don't know. We haven't thought about that yet," Shanahan said on Friday (via NBC Sports), when asked about the possibility.

49ers kicker Jake Moody's parents are Lions fans. They've got a dilemma on their hands this week.

Over the past 30 years, the Moodys haven't had much to cheer for when it comes to the Lions. From 1992 through 2022, the Lions didn't win a single playoff game. However, not only did the drought finally end this year, but Detroit is now in the NFC championship game for the first time since 1991, and as fate would have it, the Lions will be facing the one team the Moodys would prefer that they not be facing: Jake's 49ers.

There are some key injuries that could affect this game. Lions guard Jonah Jackson is OUT. Deebo Samuel is IN, but left last week's game with a shoulder injury. More on the injury report here.

Niners inactives are out. Nothing too notable except for maybe WR Ronnie Bell, who likely would have had some role if Deebo Samuel was out with his shoulder injury. LB Oren Burks is ACTIVE.

CBS Sports NFL Insider Jonathan Jones reports that Jared Goff could get a contract extension no matter how this game plays out. Read more here.

Sources tell CBS Sports both Goff and the Lions are very interested in an extension this offseason, and there's little reason to doubt a deal will get hammered out well ahead of the 2024 season.

"[The Lions] are completely sure he wants to be there," one source said.
