  • Rays' Austin Shenton: Secures first career hit and RBI

Shenton went 2-for-4 with an RBI double and a run scored in Sunday's 3-2 win over the Rockies.

After drawing his first major-league start Monday, Shenton broke through for his first MLB hit Sunday, driving in Jose Caballero with an RBI double off Dakota Hudson in the top of the second inning. He later came around to score off a single from Jose Siri in the frame while also adding another base knock himself in top of the ninth. Shenton currently doesn't have a direct path to consistent playing time, but his positional flexibility makes him a valuable utility option off the bench for Tampa Bay.

  • Rays' Austin Shenton: Draws first MLB start

Shenton went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts and a walk Monday against the Rangers.

Shenton made his first major-league start, playing first base and hitting eighth after appearing as a pinch hitter Sunday. He posted a 1.035 OPS across 271 plate appearances with Triple-A Durham in 2023, though that came at the elevated age of 25. Shenton could be an intriguing option if he can get more consistent at-bats, though it appears the Rays will have to suffer several injuries for that to occur.

  • Rays' Austin Shenton: Makes Opening Day roster

Rays manager Kevin Cash said Wednesday that Shenton has made the Rays' Opening Day roster, Steve Carney of StPeteNine.com reports.

Shenton was optioned to minor-league camp earlier this month, but injuries to other players created another opportunity and he wound up making the team. The 26-year-old can handle the corner-infield and corner-outfield spots and could also be an option at designated hitter while Jonathan Aranda (finger) opens the season on the injured list. Shenton will be making his major-league debut whenever he gets into a game.

  • Rays' Austin Shenton: Optioned to minors camp

The Rays optioned Shenton to minor-league camp Monday.

Shenton went 7-for-27 with an 8:1 K:BB over 27 at-bats this spring. The 26-year-old had a monster 1.006 OPS with 29 home runs between Double-A Montgomery and Triple-A Durham in 2023 and is a good bet to make his MLB debut at some point this season. Shenton is primarily a corner infielder but has dabbled in left field and at second base, too, giving him multiple potential avenues to playing time with the big club.

  • Rays' Austin Shenton: Selected to 40-man roster

The Rays selected Shenton to their 40-man roster Tuesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Shenton put up an impressive .304/.423/.584 batting line with 29 home runs and 99 RBI over 134 games this past season between Double-A Montgomery and Triple-A Durham. The 25-year-old corner infielder looks poised to make his major-league debut in the early part of the 2024 season.

  • Rays' Austin Shenton: Promoted to Triple-A

Shenton has been promoted from Double-A Montgomery to Triple-A Durham.

Shenton is already 25, so he is old for a player making his Triple-A debut. After being roughly league average at Double-A in 2021 (103 wRC+) and 2022 (100 wRC+), Shenton was 58 percent better than league average this year, slashing .307/.415/.567 with 15 home runs in 73 games. He received the majority of his starts at third base while at Double-A, but Shenton has been filling in at first base during his Triple-A time for Kyle Manzardo (undisclosed), who is on the injured list.

  • Rays' Austin Shenton: Headed to Tampa Bay

Shenton was traded from the Mariners to the Rays along with JT Chargois in exchange for Diego Castillo on Thursday.

Shenton has played at both High-A Everett and Double-A Arkansas this season. Across the two levels, he's hit .300/.414/.566 in 321 plate appearances. Though he's had limited time at Double-A, his 145 wRC+ at the level is encouraging for his long-term potential .
