Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Ends season on high note
Skubal struck out eight over four scoreless innings but didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 8-0 win over the Royals. He gave up two hits and no walks in the 52-pitch start.
Because the game was suspended after four innings Wednesday due to rain, Skubal's final start of 2023 was cut short, and his statistics weren't made official until the two teams completed the game Thursday. Given the abbreviated start, Skubal could be available in relief if needed Saturday or Sunday versus the Guardians, though the Tigers will presumably stay away from him for the final two games of the season if they can help it. After a spate of rocky outings upon his return from flexor tendon surgery in early July, Skubal was the Tigers' most dominant pitcher over the final two months of the season. Over his last 10 outings, Skubal went 6-2 with a 2.15 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 75:11 K:BB across 58.2 innings.

Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Continues dominant stretch
Skubal (7-3) earned the win over Oakland on Thursday, allowing two hits and issuing one walk while striking out 10 batters over seven scoreless innings.
Skubal was masterful in the outing, giving up just two hits, both of which were infield singles that were subsequently wiped out by a double play. The southpaw also racked up 14 whiffs en route to a season-best 10 punchouts. Skubal has been a revelation in four September starts, posting a minuscule 1.04 ERA and 0.62 WHIP along with a 35:4 K:BB over 26 innings. His strong finish to the campaign should make him an intriguing commodity in fantasy drafts next season.

Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Dominant against Angels
Skubal (6-3) allowed one run on three hits over seven innings Friday, striking out nine and picking up a win over the Angels.
Skubal was nearly untouchable Friday. He allowed just two singles through six shutout frames before David Fletcher tagged him with a solo shot in the seventh inning. Skubal has given up just three runs while compiling a 25:3 K:BB over his last three starts. He's also forced 53 swinging strikes during that span. Skubal will carry a 3.25 ERA into his next outing, which is currently lined up to be in Oakland.

Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Lights-out in win Saturday
Skubal (5-3) tossed five scoreless innings to earn the win Saturday against the White Sox. He allowed two hits and a walk while striking out nine.
Inefficiency is the only knock on Skubal's performance, as he needed 95 pitches to cover his five innings. It was an excellent start all the same. Skubal has posted a stellar 2.00 ERA over his last three starts, tallying 25 strikeouts in only 18 innings while lowering his season ERA to 3.47. He'll look to continue his good run in his next scheduled start, which is slated for Friday against the Angels.

Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Sharp in win Sunday
Skubal (4-3) allowed two runs on five hits across seven innings to earn the win Sunday against the White Sox. He had two walks and struck out seven.
Skubal tallied his second straight start allowing only two earned runs, and he's also struck out 16 batters over 13 innings in that time. That's allowed the lefty to lower his season ERA to a solid 3.77, and he's recorded 66 strikeouts across 57.1 innings overall. Injuries have been an issue for Skubal the past two years, but he's looked good when healthy. He'll look to build on this performance in his next scheduled start, which is penciled in for Saturday against the White Sox again.

Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Tough loss in strong start
Skubal (3-3) took the loss Tuesday, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks over six innings in a 4-2 loss against the Yankees. He struck out nine.
The talented southpaw gave up solo home runs to Gleyber Torres in the first inning and Kyle Higashioka in the fifth inning, not allowing any hits in the interim. Skubal's third run was unearned due to a passed ball in the sixth and he was tagged with the unfortunate loss as Detroit's offense failed to provide any run support. After maxing out at 5.1 innings in his first seven starts, the 26-year-old has gone exactly six innings in each of his last three outings, compiling a 3.50 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and a dazzling 23:4 K:BB across those 18 innings. Skubal's next start is tentatively scheduled to occur on the road against a fledgling White Sox offense over the weekend.

Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Settles for no-decision Wednesday
Skubal allowed four runs on six hits across six innings and did not factor into the decision Wednesday against the Cubs. He walked one and struck out seven.
Skubal pitched decently against a hot Chicago lineup, but it wasn't enough for his fourth win of the season. The lefty did manage to complete six innings for the second straight start after not going six frames in any of his previous seven appearances. Skubal will look for win No. 4 the next time he takes the hill, which is currently scheduled for Tuesday against the struggling Yankees.

Skubal (3-2) picked up the win in the first game of Friday's doubleheader against the Guardians, allowing one run on three hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out seven.
The southpaw delivered his first quality start in eight outings this season, generating 33 called or swinging strikes on only 88 pitches in a dominant performance. Skubal is now consistently tossing around 90 pitches after having his workload capped in July following his return from flexor tendon surgery, and he's posted a 2.70 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 16:4 K:BB through 16.2 innings over three August trips to the mound. His next start lines up for a home tilt next week against the Cubs.

Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Strikes out six in win
Skubal (2-1) earned the win Saturday, allowing one run on six hits and one walk over 5.1 innings against the Rays. He struck out six.
Skubal did a good job of pitching his way out of multiple jams throughout the contest, outside of the second inning, when he allowed one run to come across on a Manuel Margot single. The 26-year-old lefty would then hold the Rays scoreless over the next 3.1 innings before being relieved by Jose Cisnero. Skubal has now given up one run or fewer in four of his six starts, while the 5.1 innings marked his longest outing since he made his season debut in early July. He holds a very healthy 33:4 K:BB through 27 innings on the campaign.

Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Uneven performance Sunday
Skubal allowed four runs on six hits across 4.2 innings and did not factor into the decision in Sunday's game against the Marlins. He had no walks and struck out four.
One game after logging five scoreless innings to earn his first win of the season, Skubal was less dominant Sunday, and he failed to complete five innings for the fourth time in five starts. The Tigers are being cautious with their lefty in his return from flexor tendon surgery, and he was limited to 77 pitches in this one. Skubal can be a good fantasy pitcher, though his workload restrictions cap his upside at the moment, and that may not change until 2024. He's tentatively set to take the mound again next Sunday against the Rays.
