Diamondbacks' Corbin Carroll: Hitting seventh in return to lineup
Carroll will start in center field and bat seventh in Wednesday's game in St. Louis.
The struggling Carroll received a day off in Tuesday's 14-1 win over the Cardinals while St. Louis started lefty Steven Matz, but the star outfielder will check back into the starting nine in the bottom third of the order Wednesday versus right-hander Kyle Gibson. It's the first time this season that the 23-year-old hasn't hit first or second for Arizona. Carroll takes season-long .215/.324/.269 slash line into play Wednesday.

Diamondbacks' Corbin Carroll: Day off against left-hander
Carroll is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game in St. Louis.
Left-hander Steven Matz is toeing the rubber for the Cardinals, so it's not a bad time to give the left-batting Carroll a day off as he goes through a season-opening slump. Carroll is slashing just .175/.298/.175 over his last 10 games. Jake McCarthy will play center field and Randal Grichuk will be in right Tuesday.

Diamondbacks' Corbin Carroll: Struggles continue
Carroll went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in Saturday's 7-3 loss to the Giants, dropping his season average to .224 and OPS to .609.
A season-opening slump is taking its toll on Carroll, who has struck out seven times over the last three games -- he had just six punchouts over the first 18 contests. He's doing what he can to make an impact -- he has a team-high eight steals and 12 walks (second on team) -- but the immediate success he had as a rookie in 2023 has eluded him thus far in his sophomore season. Last year's Rookie of the Year has just three extra-base hits and five RBI through 21 games, and manager Torey Lovullo talked to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com about the outfielder's issues. "Maybe pitch selection," Lovullo said of what could be causing the struggles. "You know, trying to make adjustments in the wrong place and in the wrong space. Being athletic and just going out there and competing is a challenge for everybody and that'll be my challenge to Corbin. Just go up there and react to the baseball." Carroll's hard-hit percentage (25.0, fifth percentile) and average exit velocity (83.7 mph, third) are noticeable drop-offs from 2023.

Diamondbacks' Corbin Carroll: Avoids injury
Carroll injured his left wrist after colliding with teammate Jake McCarthy while converging on a flyball Sunday but stayed in the game, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports. He finished out the game, going 1-for-4 with two RBI and a stolen base.
Carroll was down on the ground for a bit before jogging off the field. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo confirmed no X-rays were needed, and that Carroll would be in Monday's starting lineup against the Cubs.

Carroll went 2-for-4 with a stolen base in Friday's 9-6 loss to St. Louis.
Carroll extended a hit streak to six games and swiped his fourth bag of the season. He leads the Diamondbacks in steals, but it's been a slow start to the season for Carroll, who still carries just a .684 OPS, so his hit streak is a welcome sign. He's mired in the lower percentile of average exit velocity (82.3 mph) and is chasing more than ever (32.3 percent).

Carroll went 1-for-4 with a walk and a solo home run in Tuesday's 3-2 win over the Rockies.
Carroll, who filled in as the leadoff batter for a resting Ketel Marte, homered on the second pitch of the game, sending a slider on the outside corner the other way. It was the first home run of the season for Carroll, who's wielded a quiet bat out of the gate -- he entered with a .590 OPS and one RBI through 10 games.

Though he has already drawn six walks, Carroll has just three singles and no RBI in his first five games this season. He'll get a breather Tuesday while Jorge Barrosa makes his first major-league start in center field and Jake McCarthy plays right.

Diamondbacks' Corbin Carroll: Swipes first bag of season
Carroll went 2-for-3 with two walks, a run and a stolen base in a loss against Colorado on Saturday.
Carroll has yet to record an extra-base hit through three games, but he's gotten on base eight times over 15 plate appearances due largely to his five walks. The talented young star swiped his first bag of the campaign Saturday and should be able to record plenty more thefts if he continues to reach base frequently, as he notched 54 steals on 59 attempts last year. Carroll also hit 25 homers, 30 doubles and 10 triples last season, so his power is likely to show up before long.
