Brewers' Brandon Sproat: Early exit in Saturday's matinee

Sproat didn't factor into the decision in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Pirates, giving up three runs (two earned) on two hits and two walks over three innings. He struck out three.
The 25-year-old right-hander also plunked three batters and uncorked a wild pitch, getting the hook after 83 pitches (51 strikes) and forcing the Brewers to go to their bullpen much earlier than they wanted in the twin bill. Sproat has failed to get an out in the fifth frame in three of his last five starts, but he's still managed to put together a 3.68 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 30:9 K:BB over 22 innings during that stretch. His spot in the rotation is precarious, but Sproat sees likely to stick around for a while given the current state of Milwaukee's rotation, which recently had Jacob Misiorowski (fatigue) and Kyle Harrison (elbow) miss starts.

Sproat was inefficient Sunday, throwing 55 of 92 pitches for strikes in this short start. Since the beginning of June, he has allowed 11 runs over 30 innings across six starts. He's at a 5.13 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 84:37 K:BB across 79 innings through 17 games (15 starts) this season, but he's trending in the right direction. Sproat should remain in the rotation even with Logan Henderson (back) slated to return during the coming week, as Brandon Woodruff (shoulder) was shelved following his injury Saturday. After serving up a solo homer to Sal Stewart in the first inning, Sproat settled in and held Cincinnati scoreless over the next four frames, including a stretch in which he struck out five of six batters faced. He allowed back-to-back doubles to open the sixth, plating another run before he exited. Sproat has been piling up strikeouts lately, recording 23 over his last 15 innings while issuing just four walks. He has also earned wins in back-to-back starts, both coming against Cincinnati. Sproat now owns a 5.28 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 80:34 K:BB across 75 innings. He is scheduled to face Arizona on the road Sunday in his second start of the week.

His 10 strikeouts set a new career high, and he continued to show improved command by extending his streak to five consecutive starts with two or fewer walks. Sproat not only looked to be in line for an easy victory after the Brewers built an 8-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, he was also working on a no-hitter at that point. However, the right-hander couldn't get the final three outs he needed to qualify for the victory, giving up three runs on three hits and a walk before he was pulled with two outs in the fifth. That certainly resulted in a disappointing outing for Sproat, who had picked up his first victory as a major-leaguer in his previous start. He'll look to go deeper the next time he takes the mound, which lines up to be this weekend against the Dodgers.

Sproat held the Padres out of the scoring column until Nick Castellanos banged a two-run single against him in the fourth inning. The righty hurler then served up a solo homer to Miguel Andujar in the sixth, but Milwaukee's offense gave him enough of a cushion to grab the win. The victory was the first of Sproat's big-league career in his 12th appearance (10th start). His ERA on the season still sits at an unattractive 5.75, though he has plenty to build off from Tuesday's outing. Beyond recording the victory, Sproat racked up 15 whiffs and reached five frames for the first time in his past three outings.
