  • Angels' Jose Suarez: No structural damage found in MRI

Suarez will be shut down for about a month with left shoulder inflammation, but his MRI revealed no structural damage, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. Suarez left Sunday's start in the second inning after feeling soreness in his left shoulder, and the MRI revealed the inflammation after he was placed on the injured list Monday. The shutdown will cause him to miss the rest of May and the start of June, but the positive news is it doesn't appear he'll need surgery and should be an option for the Angels for the second half of the 2023 campaign at the very least.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Shut down with shoulder strain

The Angels placed Suarez on the 15-day injured list Monday with a left shoulder strain, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. Suarez felt soreness in his left shoulder during the second inning of Sunday's start against the Rangers, and the results of an MRI were concerning enough for the left-hander to be placed on the IL. He'll miss at least two weeks of action, with the Angels calling up Cesar Valdez from Triple-A Salt Lake to take Suarez's place on the roster. Chase Silseth, who threw 3.1 innings out of the bullpen Sunday, could end up taking Suarez's spot in the rotation if the Angels opt to keep a six-man staff intact.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Undergoing MRI on shoulder

Suarez will undergo an MRI on Monday after exiting Sunday's start against the Rangers with left shoulder discomfort, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. Suarez first felt soreness in the second inning before finally being removed in the third when it didn't dissipate. A stint on the injured list for Suarez seems likely even if he gets favorable news from the MRI, especially since his spot in the Angels' rotation was already on thin ice. Chase Silseth went 3.1 innings in relief of Suarez on Sunday and would be an obvious candidate to replace him in the rotation.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Leaves with trainer

Suarez exited Sunday's start against the Rangers with an athletic trainer, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. Suarez was charged with seven earned runs across 2.2 innings, but his removal is clearly injury related since the Angels didn't have any relievers warming up. It remains to be seen if the issue will affect his availability for the next turn through the rotation.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Five scoreless in first win

Suarez (1-1) earned the win during Sunday's 3-0 victory over Milwaukee, tossing five scoreless innings in which he allowed two hits and three walks. He struck out six. Suarez allowed seven runs, including five homers, his last time out, but he was given another shot in the rotation and came through with his best outing of the campaign. The left-hander's ERA dropped from 10.26 to 7.89, and his six strikeouts were a season high. Despite the solid bounce back, the 25-year-old is likely still on the hot seat and could be in danger of being demoted to the bullpen or Triple-A if he struggles in his next start.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Still in rotation

Angels manager Phil Nevin said Tuesday that Suarez will remain in the team's rotation on a start-by-start basis, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. Suarez's start to the season has certainly been less than ideal -- he holds a 10.26 ERA and 2.28 WHIP through his first four starts. After allowing five homers and seven earned runs against Oakland on Monday, his leash has now been tightened even further. Nevin said he liked what he saw from Suarez after making some adjustments in the fourth inning Monday, so the 25-year-old lefty will keep his spot in the rotation for now. However, one more subpar performance might result in him being demoted to the bullpen or even Triple-A Salt Lake.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Yields five homers

Suarez allowed seven runs on eight hits and two walks over five innings during Monday's loss to Oakland. He struck out five and did not factor in the decision. Suarez was cursed by the long ball Monday, coughing up five home runs in the ugly start. He served up back-to-back shots to Brent Rooker and Jesus Aguilar in both the first and third innings. Suarez was in line for the loss before the Angels' bats got hot late and forced an extra inning. He's struggled out of the gate this season, posting an ugly 10.26 ERA and 12:9 K:BB through four outings. At this point, it's unclear if he'll get another shot in the rotation.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Will remain in rotation

Angels manager Phil Nevin told reporters before Wednesday's game against the Yankees that Suarez will remain in the rotation, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. Suarez has really struggled in his appearances thus far for the Angels with a 9.26 ERA over 11.2 innings while allowing 21 hits. The Angels will allow him to make at least one more start -- Suarez is scheduled to face off against the Athletics next week -- but another disappointing effort could lead to a change in the rotation.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Gives up two in another short start

Suarez allowed two runs on three hits and six walks while striking out one over 3.1 innings Tuesday against the Yankees. He did not factor into the decision. Suarez struggled with his command but was able to work around those troubles and limit the Yankees to two runs. He pitched out of a bases-loaded situation in the first and left two more runners stranded in the second. Two more walks and a base hit loaded up the bases for Suarez once again in the fourth and he was replaced by Andrew Wantz, who walked in a run and gave up another on a sac fly, both of which were charged to Suarez. The Venezuelan native now sits at a 9.26 ERA, 2.40 WHIP and 7:7 K:BB over 11.2 innings.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Gives up four runs in no-decision

Suarez did not factor into the decision Monday, allowing four runs on 10 hits and one walk over four innings during a 6-4 loss to the Nationals. He struck out two. Suarez was given early run support, but he wasn't able to hold onto the lead and was tagged for three runs in the fourth, which tied the game at 4-4. The left-hander is coming off back-to-back sub-4.00 ERA seasons, but he's struggled to start the 2023 campaign, allowing 11 runs on 18 hits over his two starts (8.1 innings).

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Roughed up in season debut

Suarez (0-1) was handed the loss after giving up seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and two walks as the Angels fell to the Mariners, 11-2, on Tuesday. He struck out four over the 77-pitch outing. The 25-year-old lefty was able to break camp as the Halos' No. 5 starter, but after a strong close to the 2022 campaign, he wasn't able to get off on the right foot in his 2023 season debut. He faced five batters and needed 31 pitches to record three outs in the opening frame, though he limited the damage to just one run, which came on a wild pitch. Suarez appeared to right the ship with a pair of 1-2-3 innings, but he unraveled in the fourth, surrendering three straight hits, including a Teoscar Hernandez home run. He served up another home run to Hernandez the following inning before being pulled from the contest a batter later.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Expected to be No. 5 starter

Suarez is lined up to start the Angels' fifth game of the season, which will take place April 4 in Seattle, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. Suarez was essentially a lock for a starting role coming into spring training after posting a 3.96 ERA and 1.25 WHIP over 22 games (20 starts last season). He has been fine in three Cactus League starts, allowing five runs (four earned) and posting a 6:3 K:BB over 8.2 innings. Suarez doesn't have the strikeout numbers or history of consistency to be an exciting option in fantasy, but he can give managers in deeper leagues decent ratios at a reasonable cost.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Strong start in last outing

Suarez (8-8) earned the win Saturday over the Rangers, allowing two runs on two hits and striking out six over seven innings. Suarez flirted with perfection in this one, throwing six clean innings before he was tagged for a two-run home run by Nathaniel Lowe in the seventh. That blast briefly put the Rangers ahead, but the Angels regained the lead to allow Suarez to be rewarded with the win, leveling his record in his last start of the year. The southpaw has had some solid moments over the second half of the campaign, giving up more than three runs just once in his last 11 outings. He'll finish the season with a 3.96 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 103:33 K:BB across 109 innings over 22 appearances (20 starts). The strong second-half performance should give Suarez an inside track to a rotation spot to begin 2023.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Earns seventh win

Suarez (7-8) allowed two runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out six in 5.2 innings to earn the win over the Twins on Sunday. Although Suarez fell one out shy of picking up a quality start Sunday, he was rewarded with his seventh win of the year after settling for losses in his last two outings. The southpaw has lasted at least five innings in all 10 of his starts following the All-Star break, and he's posted a 2.84 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 57 innings during that time. He tentatively lines up to make his next start at home against the Rangers on Sunday.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Coughs up five runs

Suarez (6-8) allowed five runs on seven hits and a walk over five innings Monday, striking out four and taking a loss against Seattle. After giving up an RBI double to Ty France in the first inning, Suarez kept things under control until Carlos Santana smoked a grand slam in the fifth. The 24-year-old southpaw had allowed three or fewer runs in eight straight outings prior to Monday's hiccup. His season ERA jumped to 4.11 alongside a 91:32 K:BB through 20 appearances. Suarez is expected to start in Minnesota this weekend.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Sleeper pitchers for Week 25 (Sept. 19-25)

I wouldn't say Suarez is a high priority this week, given his modest ceiling, but his matchups against the Mariners and Twins are decent enough. Having two helps make up for whatever volume issues he might have, though he has gone six-plus innings in two of his past three starts.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Strong in sixth win

Suarez (6-6) allowed three hits and a walk while striking out seven over seven shutout innings to earn the win Monday over the Tigers. Suarez turned in his second straight quality start and was fairly dominant, throwing 67 of 92 pitches for strikes. He left the game with a big lead that was never in danger. The southpaw has completed at least five frames without allowing more than three runs in any of his seven outings since the All-Star break. He's at a 3.77 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 84:31 K:BB through 86 innings across 18 appearances (16 starts) this year. Suarez is projected for a road start in Cleveland next week.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Sleeper pitchers for Week 23 (Sept. 5-11)

Suarez's slider is actually a pretty good swing-and-miss pitch, and he has a 2.12 ERA over his past six starts. He struggles to go deep into games, but there's no matchup more favorable than the Tigers, his opponent this week.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Tames Yankees in victory

Suarez (5-6) earned the win over the Yankees on Monday, pitching six innings and allowing two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out six batters. Suarez gave up only three hits in the outing, though two of them -- including an Anthony Rizzo solo home run -- went for extra-bases. The left-handed hurler demonstrated good control with 56 of his 87 pitching going for strikes, and of his three walks, two were intentional passes to Aaron Judge. Suarez turned in his third quality start of the campaign and ended a two-game losing streak to bring his record to 5-6. He had a strong month of August, posting a 2.51 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 29:7 K:BB over 28.2 innings across five starts.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Chased in sixth

Suarez (4-6) was charged with a loss Tuesday after he pitched 5.1 innings, giving up three runs on eight hits while striking out five versus the Rays. Suarez surrendered two runs in bottom of the third frame before being chased from the game with one out in the sixth inning after he gave up a solo homer to Isaac Paredes and a single to Taylor Walls. The left-hander has now allowed six runs on 12 hits over 10.2 innings in his last two starts after he had produced three consecutive scoreless outings prior. Since July 26, Suarez has compiled a 1.93 ERA over five starts, lowering his season-long ERA to 4.19 over 73 innings in 16 outings.
