Romero spent the start of the season recovering from Tommy John surgery that he underwent in May of 2021, but he began a rehab assignment in mid-June and posted a 1.54 ERA and 1.03 WHIP in 11.2 innings over 11 appearances in the minors. The southpaw earned seven holds over 23 appearances during his first two seasons in the majors, and it's possible that he'll work his way into some setup duties during the second half of the 2022 season.

Romero is ready for game action as he makes his way back from Tommy John surgery, a procedure he underwent in May of last year. He'll presumably need a lengthy rehab assignment before he's activated off the injured list. He's far from guaranteed to head to the active roster once cleared, as he's thrown just 19.2 career major-league innings, struggling to a 7.32 ERA.

Romero couldn't be on the injured list over the offseason, but he was always going to return to it as soon as possible, as he's out for the early part of the season while he recovers from Tommy John surgery. He'll be ineligible to return before early June, though he could be out longer than that given he underwent the procedure in mid-May of last year. He could return to the big-league bullpen in the second half.

Romero struggled to a 7.00 ERA and 1.78 WHIP in nine innings of work before hitting the injured list in early May with what was originally referred to as a left elbow sprain. As it turns out, the injury is a very serious one, and he'll now miss not only the remainder of the season but likely the majority of next year as well.

Romero was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left elbow sprain Thursday, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Romero's fastball velocity dipped to 94.3 mph Wednesday after averaging 95.7 mph over his previous two appearances, so it's perhaps no surprise to learn that something was wrong with his arm. The severity of the injury and his expected return date are not yet clear. Fellow lefty Ranger Suarez was recalled in a corresponding move.

Though Romero made his big-league debut in 2020 as a reliever, the Phillies may not be ready to pull the plug on developing the 24-year-old as a starter. The 23-year-old was optioned to the alternate training site after serving as the 29th man for Thursday's doubleheader, but he'll quickly rejoin the team with Jose Alvarez (groin) placed on the injured list.
