Blue Jays' Spencer Horwitz: Optioned to Triple-A
Horwitz was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo on Sunday.
The 26-year-old came into camp hoping to land a backup job at first base behind Vladimir Guerrero, but Horwitz batted only .125 (5-for-40) in Grapefruit League action, and the signings of Daniel Vogelbach and Joey Votto (ankle) cut off his path to the 26-man roster. Horwitz slashed .337/.450/.495 with 10 homers in 107 games for Buffalo last season, but he may need to add more power to his profile to get serious consideration for a regular job in the majors.

Blue Jays' Spencer Horwitz: Struggling at plate this spring
Horwitz is batting .138 (4-for-29) with his only extra-base hit being a double through 12 Grapefruit League games.
The 26-year-old came into camp with a chance to win a spot on the Toronto bench as a left-handed complement to Vladimir Guerrero at first base and Justin Turner at DH, but Horwitz has done little to secure the gig. The organization's subsequent moves to bring in Daniel Vogelbach and Joey Votto suggest Horwitz is headed for some minor-league seasoning. He slashed .337/.450/.495 over 107 games for Triple-A Buffalo last year, and his 6:7 BB:K this spring reflects his strong plate discipline, but he'll need to make more consistent hard contact to have much of a big-league future.

Blue Jays' Spencer Horwitz: Facing competition in camp
Horwitz could be battling the recently signed Daniel Vogelbach for a spot on the Blue Jays' bench.
The 26-year-old Horwitz was expected to be the main backup at first base and DH, offering a left-handed option behind Vladimir Guerrero and Justin Turner, but that's exactly the role Vogelbach has filled during his career. Horwitz offers more contact that the veteran and slashed .337/.450/.495 for Triple-A Buffalo last season with 10 homers in 107 games, but Vogelbach's career .814 OPS against right-handed pitching and power upside would give the Jays' bench an element it currently lacks. Given the duo's limited defensive flexibility, it seems highly unlikely both would make the 26-man roster.

Blue Jays' Spencer Horwitz: Sent down to minors

Triple-A Buffalo's season is over, which is the reasoning behind Horwitz being sent to the Jays' FCL club. He's clearing out to make room for Brandon Belt's return from the injured list.

Blue Jays' Spencer Horwitz: Another start Thursday
Horwitz is playing first base and batting sixth Thursday against the Yankees.
It's the second straight start for Horwitz, who filled the DH role Wednesday after Vladimir Guerrero (knee) was scratched and tallied three RBI as part of a 6-1 victory. Horwitz was a last-minute lineup replacement for Brandon Belt, who was a late scratch due to back tightness. Toronto recalled Horwitz from Triple-A Buffalo on Friday, Kaitlyn McGrath of The Athletic reports.
Horwitz returns to the majors as a backup at first base and in the corner outfield with rosters expanding from 26 to 28. The 25-year-old went 2-for-8 in a brief stint with the Blue Jays back in June and has posted an impressive .337/.450/.495 slash line with 10 homers and 72 RBI across 107 games this summer at Triple-A.

The Blue Jays will recall Horwitz from Triple-A Buffalo on Friday, Eric Treuden of Jays Journal reports.
Horwitz already had a brief three-game stint with the Jays in June and went 2-for-8 with an RBI and a run scored. He's slashed .337/.450/.495 across 484 plate appearances with Triple-A Buffalo and will serve as a bench bat down the stretch as the Jays make a push for the postseason.

Horwitz is currently playing for Team Israel in the World Baseball Classic and will report to the backfields of Dunedin when the tournament concludes.
