Player Outlook
Brent Rooker went from being designated for assignment by the Royals in November of 2022 to becoming a bona fide breakout slugger for the Athletics in 2023. He was one of only 29 major leaguers to reach the 30-homer plateau and he posted the 14th-highest OPS (.817) among all qualified American League hitters. Rooker strikes out often and is probably never going to be a good source for batting average, but his power stroke sure appears to be a bankable asset. He finished in the 93rd percentile last year in barrel percentage and was in the 91st percentile in hard-hit rate. The 29-year-old is going to have to make a lot of noise on his own as part of a mostly punchless Oakland offense, but that poor supporting cast at least assures him everyday at-bats in a fruitful lineup spot.

  • Athletics' Brent Rooker: Blasts three-run homer Tuesday

Rooker went 2-for-3 with a three-run home run and an additional run in a Cactus League tie with the Rangers on Tuesday. The taste of offensive success, which was highlighted by a sixth-inning homer with Zack Gelof and JJ Bleday aboard, was a much-needed respite from Rooker's spring struggles. The 29-year-old's round tripper was his first since Feb. 27, and he now has back-to-back two-hit efforts after a 2-for-21 funk that had encompassed his previous eight games.

  • Athletics' Brent Rooker: Bat starting to come around

Rooker went 1-for-3 with a run in a Cactus League win over the Angels on Wednesday. The Athletics' primary designated hitter was 0-for-4 through his first two spring games, but he's bounced back to go 4-for-15 with a home run, two RBI, a walk, a stolen base and four runs over his subsequent five exhibitions. Rooker broke out with an out-of-nowhere 30-homer tally in 2023 while playing a career-high 137 games, although a 32.7 percent strikeout rate he'll be looking to significantly shave down this season helped cap his adequate .246 average and encouraging .329 on-base percentage from being even better.

  • Athletics' Brent Rooker: Homers in 2023 finale

Rooker went 3-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Sunday's 7-3 loss to the Angels. Rooker capped off his 2023 campaign on a strong note by going perfect at the plate and hitting his 30th home run of the season. The 28-year-old began the year as one of the hottest hitters in baseball before having a brutal hitting stretch during May and June. He maintained more of a steady approach after the All-Star break, slashing .246/.313/.403 with 14 homers, 25 RBI, 29 runs and a 16:80 BB:K in 223 plate appearances. Rooker was one of the few bright spots for a struggling A's team and could be a trade piece for them in the offseason.

  • Athletics' Brent Rooker: Productive in Wednesday's loss

Rooker went 1-for-4 with a two-run single and a stolen base in a loss to the Twins on Wednesday. Rooker made good use of the one at-bat he hit safely in, plating Ryan Noda and Aledmys Diaz to snap a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning. The slugger also added to his career-best stolen-base total with his fourth pilfer of the campaign after not having logged a single steal attempt over his previous three major league seasons. Rooker has also now reached safely in nine straight games and 10 consecutive starts, producing a .314/.368/.743 slash line in the 38 plate appearances he's recorded over the latter span.

  • Athletics' Brent Rooker: Launches 27th homer Wednesday

Rooker went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in a loss to the Mariners on Wednesday. Rooker was one of the few bright spots for Oakland's bats, hitting the second of two Athletics homers off George Kirby when he launched a 410-foot shot with Seth Brown aboard in the sixth. The rookie has now left the yard in four of his last seven games, a welcome power surge that's helped him push his season-long OPS over the .800 mark (.801).

  • Athletics' Brent Rooker: Not starting Tuesday

Rooker isn't in the Athletics' lineup Tuesday against Seattle. Rooker has slashed .214/.313/.548 with four homers since the start of September, and he'll take a seat for the start of Tuesday's contest. • Athletics' Brent Rooker: Provides only run with homer

Rooker went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's loss to the Padres. The Athletics only managed six total hits on the day and Rooker accounted for two of them including their only extra-base hit of the day with an eighth-inning solo home run. The long ball was his third over the last five games and his 26th of the year, as he continues to be one of the rare sources of power in the A's lineup. For the year, the first-time All-Star is slashing .241/.324/.797 with 60 RBI, 55 runs and a 45:126 BB:K in 481 plate appearances.

  • Athletics' Brent Rooker: On bench Saturday

Rooker will sit Saturday against the Padres. Rooker leads Oakland in homers (25) this season, and his .239/.324/.467 slash line is good for a 119 wRC+, third on the team behind Ryan Noda and Zack Gelof. Under ordinary circumstances, that would probably be good for an everyday role, but with the 46-101 Athletics firmly in rebuild mode, expect them to continue spreading at-bats around down the stretch so they can evaluate what they have on their roster. Tyler Soderstrom will be Saturday's designated hitter.

  • Athletics' Brent Rooker: Squares up for key homer

Rooker went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in a win over the Angels on Saturday. Rooker's 23rd blast of the season was a noteworthy one, a 436-foot shot with Ryan Noda aboard in the fourth inning that would prove to be the difference in the game despite it coming relatively early in the contest. Rooker has been swinging a particularly productive bat since mid-August despite still struggling with making consistent contact -- he owns a .277 average and .852 OPS over his last 17 games, a stretch that includes eight extra-base hits (four doubles, four homers) and eight RBI.

  • Athletics' Brent Rooker: Takes seat Friday

Rooker is not in the lineup Friday against the Nationals. Lawrence Butler will patrol right field and bat eighth in his MLB debut, while Esteury Ruiz is in center and hitting leadoff. • Athletics' Brent Rooker: Back in lineup

Rooker will start in right field and bat fifth in Sunday's game against the Giants. Rooker was on the bench for Saturday's 2-1 win, though he entered the contest as a pinch hitter and delivered a single in his lone plate appearance. Back in the lineup Sunday, Rooker has now started in eight of the past nine games and looks to have solidified a regular spot in right field in the wake of Oakland designating Ramon Laureano for assignment. Rooker has posted a modest .689 OPS while striking out at a 37.2 percent clip since the All-Star break, but that level of production is enough to keep his playing time secure in an Oakland lineup lacking in impact bats.
