Rockies' Lucas Gilbreath: Not returning this season
Rockies manager Bud Black said Monday that Gilbreath (elbow) won't return from the 15-day injured list before the end of the season, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.
Gilbreath is due to receive a platelet-rich plasma injection to address his left elbow flexor strain and is expected to avoid surgery, but with just a month left in the season, he won't have sufficient time to complete his rehab program for the injury before the Rockies wrap up their schedule in the first week of October. The 26-year-old southpaw turned in a 4.19 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 49:26 K:BB to go with 12 holds in 43 innings over 47 relief appearances before he landed on the 15-day injured list Aug. 28.... Rockies' Lucas Gilbreath: Sidelined with flexor strain
The Rockies placed Gilbreath on the 15-day injured list Sunday with a left elbow flexor strain.
Gilbreath presumably picked up the injury following his most recent relief appearance Friday against the Mets. Colorado reinstated Alex Colome (elbow) from the 15-day IL in a corresponding move, and he'll replace Gilbreath in the bullpen. Gilbreath has been a key part of the bridge to closer Daniel Bard with 12 holds on the season, but his ratios (4.19 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 12.3 K-BB%) haven't been strong enough to keep him on the radar in the majority of fantasy leagues. According to Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post, Gilbreath will undergo an MRI on Monday, which should reveal the extent of his injury while also shedding light on whether surgery will be necessary.... Gilbreath allowed two earned runs on one hit and one walk across two-thirds of an inning Wednesday against the Phillies.
Gilbreath was activated from the COVID-19 injured list Monday, so this outing marked his season debut. He entered the game in the seventh inning with the bases loaded and the score tied. He hit the first batter he faced to force in a run, but the big blow came two hitters later when he allowed a three-run home run to Johan Camargo. Gilbreath was solid out of the Rockies' bullpen in 2021, maintaining a 3.38 ERA and 1.31 WHIP across 42.2 frames while also tallying four holds. He should hold a similar role in 2022.... See More ... Rockies' Lucas Gilbreath: Extends scoreless streak
Gilbreath worked around a walk to record the final two outs of the seventh inning in his relief appearance Wednesday in the Rockies' 3-2 win over Atlanta.
The scoreless appearance was Gilbreath's 14th in a row, and the rookie lefty has struck out 13 while allowing only 11 baserunners over that 14-inning stretch. Carlos Estevez appears to have settled in as the Rockies' new closer in place of the deposed Daniel Bard, but Gilbreath looks like he'll at least factor more prominently into the setup mix in light of his recent success....
