Player Outlook
Luis Gil underwent Tommy John surgery in May of 2022 and made it back for two appearances at Triple-A in September of 2023. His mid-to-upper-90s fastball velocity was back, averaging 96 mph while touching 99 mph. His devastating high-spin slider was also at its pre-surgery 85-86 mph velocity. This is his last season with a minor-league option, so the 25-year-old righty may move back and forth between Triple-A and the majors, particularly if the Yankees want to keep developing him as a starter. While Gil's repertoire is pretty shallow -- he'll flash a decent changeup but it is rarely used -- the biggest swing skill for him will be his command, as his fastball and slider are good enough pitches to turn a lineup over twice if he's locating them. He's had a walk rate north of 14 percent during four of his six assignments since 2021, and the hope is that his control will be passable as he gets further removed from surgery. If he does get moved to the bullpen, Gil has the stuff to pitch in high-leverage situations.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Issues seven free passes in loss

Gil (0-1) took the loss Monday against the Blue Jays, allowing three runs on three hits and seven walks over five innings. He struck out six. Gil struggled to find the strike zone Monday night in Toronto, walking seven batters, equaling a career-high previously set on Sept. 8, 2021, also against the Blue Jays. However, the 25-year-old still flashed his strikeout prowess, punching out six batters and generating 16 whiffs. Gil looks to bounce back in his next start, scheduled against the Rays at home.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Available Saturday

Gil will be available out of the bullpen for Saturday's doubleheader against the Guardians, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports. Per manager Aaron Boone, Gil would likely start Monday's game in Toronto if he doesn't pitch Saturday, but if he is used, he would slot back into the rotation Wednesday against the Blue Jays. Gil is available either for length or a big spot, so he could pick up a win or even a save during the twin bill. Nestor Cortes will start Sunday against Cleveland.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Fans eight in no-decision

Gil (0-0) didn't factor into the decision Sunday, allowing two runs on two hits and four walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out eight Blue Jays. Gil's poor command came back to bite him Sunday, as he allowed a single to George Springer and then issued three straight free passes -- one hit-by-pitch -- to bring Springer around to score. Other than his walk problem (seven walks in nine innings), Gil has been great to start 2024, owning a 3.00 ERA with 14 strikeouts through two starts, both of which have come against dangerous offenses. He's lined up to face the Guardians in Cleveland for his next projected start.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Impresses in 2024 debut

Gil didn't factor into the decision Monday against Arizona, going 4.2 innings and yielding one run on one hit and three walks. He struck out six. Gil showed his worth as the Yankees' fifth starter and Gerrit Cole (elbow) fill-in, holding the D-Backs to one hit in his first MLB appearance since 2022. The righty got himself into trouble in the third, allowing a hit and a walk before advancing both the runners on a wild pitch, opening up the opportunity for Ketel Marte to cash in on a sac fly. Still, Gil looks to be a quality option for the Yankees moving forward and will look to keep the ball rolling in his next projected start Sunday against Toronto -- who got no-hit by Houston's Ronel Blanco on Monday.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Recalled from Triple-A

The Yankees recalled Gil from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday. He was optioned in early March, but Gil wound up winning the Yankees' fifth starter job after Gerrit Cole went down with an elbow injury that forced him to the 60-day IL. Gil is tentatively slated to make his season debut Monday in Arizona.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Wins job as fifth starter

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Sunday that Gil will open the year as the team's fifth starter, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. A slot in the rotation became available when it was announced that Gerrit Cole (elbow) would miss extended time at the start of the campaign, and Gil was among a group of hurlers competing for the role in spring training. The right-hander posted an excellent 2.87 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 23:6 K:BB over 15.2 Grapefruit League innings and drew positive comments from rival scouts, so his spot in the Opening Day rotation is well-deserved. Gil has made seven big-league appearances (all starts) in his career, posting a 3.78 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 43:21 K:BB across 33.1 frames. He should get several turns in the rotation to try to establish himself since Cole is not expected to be able to return until late May or early June at the earliest.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Among candidates for rotation spot

Gil could be considered for a spot in the Yankees' Opening Day rotation if Gerrit Cole (elbow) needs to miss time, Randy Miller of NJ Advance Media reports. Gil was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on March 3, but he could potentially be brought back up if the Yankees need him to fill a spot on the big-league roster. Manager Aaron Boone acknowledged Monday that Cole, who has already undergone an MRI on his pitching elbow and is scheduled for more testing, isn't likely to be ready for Opening Day, per Erik Boland of Newsday, so the team is almost certain to need a fill-in starter for at least the short term. Gil looked great in his most recent Grapefruit League outing, striking out eight batters and allowing just one hit and no walks over 3.2 innings against the Phillies on Monday, and he's posted a 3.24 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 14:3 K:BB overall through 8.1 spring frames. Other candidates to potentially step in for Cole include fellow youngsters Clayton Beeter and Will Warren, although Warren isn't on the 40-man roster.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Sent to Triple-A

Gil was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday. Gil made two Grapefruit League appearances and will shift to minor-league camp after he allowed two runs on a hit and two walks while striking out three. The right-hander is currently stretched out as a starter but could be shifted to a relief role, which would likely provide a clearer path to a roster spot in the majors. Gil missed most of last season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, though he returned for a couple minor-league rehab starts in September.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Shift to bullpen possible

Gil will be stretched out to start this spring, but the Yankees are open to the possibility of shifting him to a relief role, Andy Martino of SNY.tv reports. The Yankees remain high on Gil's potential as a starting pitcher, but they could have more of an immediate need in the bullpen. Clayton Beeter is also a possibility to shift to relief. Gil was limited to just two rehab starts in 2023 after coming back from Tommy John surgery but has arrived to spring training without restrictions.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Lit up for four runs in rehab start

Gil (elbow) tossed two innings and struck out three while giving up four earned runs on three hits and two walks in his rehab start Thursday for Single-A Tampa. Gil made his second appearance at Tampa after striking out three over another two-inning start in his first rehab outing Sept. 1. The right-hander's fastball velocity is reportedly sitting around the same levels it had prior to him undergoing Tommy John surgery last May, but like most pitchers returning from a major elbow injury, Gil's command and control have been lacking a bit thus far during his rehab assignment. He'll eventually shift his rehab assignment to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre before potentially making his return from the 60-day injured list before the end of the season. The Yankees envision Gil serving as a starter over the long haul, but if he makes any appearances for the big club in 2023, he'll likely be doing so in a relief role.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Fastball velocity back

Gil's (elbow) fastball was clocked at 98 miles per hour during his first rehab outing Friday for Single-A Tampa, Erik Boland of Newsday reports. Gil allowed one run on three hits and one walk while striking out three batters over two innings. His fastball averaged 96 mph in the majors in 2021, so it's a positive sign that his velocity is all the way back after having not pitched since May 2022 due to Tommy John surgery.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Starting rehab assignment

Gil (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment with Low-A Tampa on Friday, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. It will be his first game action since he underwent Tommy John surgery last May. While it's possible the Yankees could activate Gil later this month, the most important thing at this point is getting him built back up so he has a chance to contribute as a starter next season. The righty would seem to be a prime candidate for the Arizona Fall League and/or winter ball.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Throws live batting practice

Gil (elbow) threw live batting practice Friday, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. It's the first time Gil has faced hitters since he underwent Tommy John surgery last May. The young right-hander has a chance to help the Yankees at some point in the second half, although he might not have enough time to be built back up to contribute as a starter.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Throws bullpen session

Gil (elbow) threw a bullpen session Friday, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports. It's his first time throwing off a mound since last year's Tommy John surgery. Gil had the operation last May and will try to become an option for the Yankees' rotation or bullpen at some point in the second half.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Progresses to bullpens

Gil (elbow) recently began throwing bullpen sessions, Randy Miller of NJ Advance Media reports. Gil underwent Tommy John surgery in May of last year and is about 10 months into his rehab. He hasn't yet faced hitters, but the fact that he's tossing bullpens suggests that the right-hander hasn't had any setbacks. Gil isn't expected to be ready to return to game action until at least July.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Requires Tommy John surgery

Gil will undergo Tommy John surgery Tuesday, Laura Albanese of Newsday reports. Gil exited his start at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday with an elbow injury, and the issue is significant enough to require surgery. Prior to the 23-year-old's injury, he had posted a 7.89 ERA, 31:15 K:BB and 1.70 WHIP in 21.2 innings over six starts with the Triple-A club this year. The right-hander will be sidelined for the remainder of the 2022 season and should miss a significant portion of the 2023 campaign.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Contending with major injury

Manager Aaron Boone said Gil (elbow) is dealing with a "significant" injury, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports. The right-hander was removed from Wednesday's start with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre with an apparent elbow injury, and he'll apparently be sidelined for the foreseeable future. The specifics of the injury remain unclear, but Gil's availability for the rest of the season is now in queston.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Exits with arm injury

Gil was removed from his start with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday after gesturing to his right elbow, Conor Foley of The Scranton Times-Tribune reports. The 24-year-old was making his first start back with the RailRiders after a brief stint with the Yankees, but his return outing was cut short by the injury. The specifics of the injury remain unclear, but any arm issue is a worrying sign for Gil, who's struggled to a 9.53 ERA at Triple-A this year.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Optioned to Triple-A

Gil was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday. Gil served as a spot starter Thursday against the White Sox but settled for a no-decision after allowing four runs on five hits and two walks while striking out five in four innings. He has a 9.53 ERA and 1.76 WHIP in 17 innings over five minor-league starts this year and will likely need to generate better results if he hopes to gain a full-time role with the major-league club at some point in 2022.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Tosses four innings in 2022 debut

Gil allowed four runs on five hits and two walks while striking five over four innings Thursday against the White. He did not factor in the decision. The right-hander was called up from Triple-A earlier in the day to make a spot start with the Yankees in the midst of a stretch of six games over five days. He flashed some good stuff by inducing 17 swinging strikes and racking up five punchouts, but a three-run second inning was largely to blame for an overall ineffective final line. Gil will likely head back to the minors, where he has struggled with a 9.53 ERA and 1.76 WHIP across 17 innings this season.
