Player Outlook
The Red Sox acquired Vaughn Grissom in the Chris Sale trade with the expectation that Grissom would be the Opening Day second baseman in 2024. However, it could end up being Enmanuel Valdez at the keystone instead, if the groin strain Grissom suffered early in spring training costs him the start of the season, as feared. After a long climb through the Houston organization, Valdez was traded to Boston at the 2022 deadline in the Christian Vazquez deal. Valdez finally debuted in the majors in April last year and played in 49 games with the Red Sox around missed time due to thumb and hamstring injuries. Although Valdez is not tall in stature, there is legitimate power in his bat. He muscled 16 home runs in just 106 games between Triple-A and the majors last season after blasting 28 long balls across three stops the year prior.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: In Monday's lineup

Valdez (thumb) will start at second base and bat seventh in Monday's game versus the Guardians. Valdez didn't play Sunday after exiting Saturday's contest with a bruised left thumb, although he might not have been in the lineup, anyway, since they were facing a lefty. Either way, he's back in there Monday against Xzavion Curry and the Guardians.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: Retreats to bench Sunday

Valdez (thumb) is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Angels, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. After exiting Saturday's 7-2 win early with a bruised left thumb, Valdez will hit the bench for the series finale. It's unclear whether the injury is actually keeping him out of the lineup, as the lefty-hitting Valdez likely would have been on the bench anyway with a southpaw (Tyler Anderson) on the mound for the Halos. In any case, Pablo Reyes will fill in for Valdez at the keystone.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: Suffers bruised thumb

Valdez left Saturday's game against the Angels due to a left thumb contusion, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports. Miguel Sano fell on Valdez's left hand while attempting to tag him out during the sixth inning, but Valdez appears to have escaped the incident with minimal damage. It's still possible the Red Sox hold him out of the lineup for a few days in order to allow his thumb to properly heal, though an IL stint seems unlikely at this point.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: Idle against lefty

Valdez isn't in Boston's lineup for Friday's game against the Angels, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. Valdez will take a seat as lefty Reid Detmers prepares to start Friday's series opener for the Halos. Pablo Reyes will man second base instead while Bobby Dalbec covers the hot corner.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: On bench against southpaw

Valdez is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Orioles. The lefty-hitting Valdez is on the bench Wednesday while southpaw Cole Irvin takes the hill for Baltimore. The righty-hitting Pablo Reyes will step in for Valdez on Wednesday, and the two could continue to form a platoon at the keystone until Vaughn Grissom (groin) is ready to return from the injured list.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: Part of platoon at second base

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Monday that Valdez will be part of a platoon at second base to open the season, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. While Cora didn't specify which players would platoon at the keystone, he was presumably referring to Valdez as the long side of the platoon and Pablo Reyes as the short side. It will be a short-term arrangement, as Vaughn Grissom (groin) is due back in mid-to-late April and will be in line to take over everyday duties at the position at that time.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: Next up at second base

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Saturday that Valdez is next in line at second base due to Vaughn Grissom (groin) being sidelined, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. The team is not yet ruling Grissom out for Opening Day, but it looks like a longshot that he'll be ready. A replacement from outside the organization doesn't appear to be in the cards, which leaves Valdez at the top of the pecking order and Pablo Reyes also in the mix. Valdez, 25, struggles with the glove but has some offensive promise, having slashed .266/.311/.453 with six homers and five steals over 149 plate appearances with Boston in 2023.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: Starts at second base

Valdez started at second base and went 2-for-4 in Saturday's 1-0 loss to the White Sox. Valdez, who was called up Friday after the Red Sox placed Luis Urias (calf) on the injured list, is expected to share second base with prospect Ceddanne Rafaela over the final week of the season. Rafaela will also see time in center field or shortstop.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: Returns to majors

The Red Sox recalled Valdez from Triple-A Worcester on Friday. With Luis Urias (calf) on the injured list, Valdez will come up to give the Red Sox additional depth in the infield. Valdez has slashed .246/.294/.415 across 126 plate appearances in the majors this season.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: Homers Tuesday

Valdez went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and a second run scored in Tuesday's loss to the Rays. Valdez got Boston on the board in the third inning with a two-run blast off Zach Eflin, his fifth homer of the year and first in the big leagues since May 31. The 24-year-old Valdez has started three of four games at second base since he was recalled from Triple-A when rosters expanded, going 4-for-10 with four RBI in that span. He should continue to see regular work with Pablo Reyes (elbow) on the IL.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: Gets another look at second base

Valdez will start at second base and bat ninth in Tuesday's game against the Rays, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. Set to make his third start at the keystone in four games, the lefty-hitting Valdez looks as though he could occupy the strong side of a platoon at the position with the righty-hitting Luis Urias while Pablo Reyes (elbow) is on the injured list. Valdez went 2-for-7 with a walk, two RBI and a run between his last two starts.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: Recalled from Triple-A

Boston recalled Valdez from Triple-A Worcester on Friday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. Valdez got an extended run with the Red Sox earlier this season but batted just .234 with a .684 OPS across 101 plate appearances. The 24-year-old has put up impressive power numbers in the minors and could perhaps platoon at second base with Luis Urias.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: Healthy again at Triple-A

Valdez (hamstring) is slashing .150/.271/.325 with two home runs, seven RBI and seven runs in 11 games since being reinstated from Triple-A Worcester's 7-day injured list Aug. 6. Valdez missed about three weeks of action on account of a left hamstring strain. The 24-year-old received a look as Boston's everyday second baseman earlier in 2023, but since he's struggled to get going since returning to the lineup at Worcester and because Pablo Reyes and Luis Urias are both excelling as part of a timeshare at the keystone at the big-league level, Valdez likely won't be in store for a promotion in the near future.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: Activated from Triple-A IL

Valdez (thumb) was activated from the 7-day injured list at Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. Valdez hurt his left thumb a couple weeks ago but is ready to return to game action. He had been hitting well before getting hurt and, if he can pick up where he left off, could position himself for a promotion at some point.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: Jams thumb Tuesday

Valdez was removed Tuesday in the top of the third inning of Triple-A Worcester's 7-5 win over Lehigh Valley due to a jammed thumb, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. While Valdez's injury doesn't seem significant on the surface, it couldn't come at a worse time with the Red Sox's middle-infield depth taking another hit Tuesday, when Pablo Reyes was revealed to be dealing with abdominal soreness. The Red Sox remain hopeful that Reyes will avoid a trip to the injured list, but the team will still add an extra infielder to the taxi squad Wednesday in case Reyes' condition is worse than anticipated. Though Valdez likely would have been the logical choice to join the taxi squad after he previously played in 33 games with the big club earlier this season, his thumb injury prompted the Red Sox to bring Worcester infielder David Hamilton aboard.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: Sent to Triple-A

Valdez was optioned to Triple-A Worcester on Friday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. Valdez had some promising moments during his several-week run with the Red Sox, but he ultimately holds a .234 batting average and .280 on-base percentage through his first 101 major-league plate appearances. The 24-year-old infielder will head back to Worcester for a bit more minor-league seasoning.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: On bench versus southpaw

Valdez is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Rays. The lefty-hitting rookie will retreat to the bench for the series finale while the Rays bring a tough southpaw in Shane McClanahan to the hill. Christian Arroyo (hamstring), who was reinstated from the injured list earlier Monday, will step in for Valdez as the Red Sox's starting second baseman for this one.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: In nine spot Thursday

Valdez is starting at second base and batting ninth Thursday against the Reds, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. Valdez usually bats eighth in front of catcher Connor Wong against right-handers, but the two have flip-flopped spots for this one. The rookie infielder homered Wednesday but overall has slumped the last couple weeks, going 6-for-35 across his last 13 contests.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: On bench versus southpaw

Valdez is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Angels, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. Valdez sits against most lefties and will do so in this one versus southpaw Tyler Anderson. Pablo Reyes will cover second base.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: Returns to action

Valdez (undisclosed) has returned to the Red Sox' lineup for Monday's game against the Angels, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. Valdez was lifted from Sunday's game versus the Padres with an undisclosed issue, but whatever it was no longer appears to be of concern. He's at second base and batting seventh against Jaime Barria.
