• Angels' Jose Soriano: Blanks Reds, stuck with loss

  Soriano (0-3) took the loss Sunday, allowing three hits and three walks with seven strikeouts over six scoreless innings against Cincinnati. Soriano was excellent Sunday, setting a career-high in strikeouts over six scoreless. He's been a solid option for the Angels since moving out of the bullpen, having allowed one run and four hits with 13 strikeouts in his past two appearances (11.0 innings). However, he's had difficulties with control, walking eight batters in that stretch. Soriano's next start is tentatively scheduled for Saturday against the Twins.

  Soriano came away with a no-decision in Tuesday's 7-6 extra-innings loss to the Rays, allowing one run on one hit and five walks over five innings. He struck out six. Making his second start of the season, Soriano threw just 48 of 90 pitches for strikes, but he generated 28 called or swinging strikes and the only hit against him was a fourth-inning single. The right-hander was in line to collect his first win of the season, but Carlos Estevez blew the save in the ninth. Soriano has a 12:5 K:BB through nine innings since moving into the rotation, and with Chase Silseth (elbow) not expected back until early May, he'll get at least a couple more turns. Soriano lines up to make his next start this coming weekend in Cincinnati.

Even though he was touched up for four earned runs on six hits in just four innings in his first MLB start last Wednesday against the Rays, Soriano's 6:0 K:BB and eight swinging strikes on 72 pitches were encouraging. He'll get another crack at Tampa Bay in his second turn through the rotation, this time at Tropicana Field after the prior outing came at Angel Stadium. The 25-year-old could hold down a spot in the Anaheim rotation until Chase Silseth (elbow) is ready to return from the injured list.

  Soriano (0-2) took the loss Wednesday, giving up four runs on six hits over four innings as the Angels fell 4-2 to the Rays. He struck out six without walking a batter. Tampa Bay jumped on Soriano early, scoring three runs in the first inning and tacking on one more in the second, but the right-hander settled down before exiting his first start of the season after 72 pitches (49 strikes). He generated an encouraging 24 called or swinging strikes though, and the 25-year-old should have shown enough to get a longer look in the rotation. His next outing is likely to be a rematch with the Rays early next week in Tampa.

  Soriano earned a hold against Baltimore on Sunday, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out two batters over three scoreless innings. Soriano was initially tabbed to stretch out as a starter during spring camp, but he ultimately made the Opening Day roster as a reliever due to Robert Stephenson's shoulder injury. Soriano entered in the sixth inning in his season debut Sunday and successfully bridged the gap between starter Reid Detmers and closer Carlos Estevez with three scoreless frames. Per Statcast, Soriano averaged 100.4 mph on his 12 four-seam fastballs and 98.2 mph on his 19 sinkers, and he went to his curveball just three times. That's a turnaround from last year, when the curve was the right-hander's most prominent pitch, as he threw it 41.2 percent of the time. Soriano has the arsenal to thrive as either a starter or reliever, with walks being his primary flaw last season -- he posted a 12.4 percent walk rate to somewhat offset his excellent 30.3 percent strikeout rate.

  With Robert Stephenson (shoulder) uncertain to be ready for game action by Opening Day, the Angels are considering whether to move Soriano to a relief role, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. Soriano had been stretching out as a starter this spring, but Stephenson's shoulder issue may shift that plan, at least temporarily. Soriano posted a respectable 3.64 ERA in 42 innings as a reliever last season, though he had been primarily a starter in the minors prior to undergoing revision Tommy John surgery in 2021. Angels manager Ron Washington indicated late last week that the team still wants to see what Soriano can do as a starter and suggested that a move to the bullpen would be to "take care of need" before "thinking long term."

The rookie reliever was up to the task, retiring the side in order in the seventh inning and working around a hit-by-pitch and a single to keep New York off the scoreboard in the eighth. Soriano has emerged as a key piece of the Angels' bullpen since being called up in early June, posting a 2.81 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 44:20 K:BB over 32 innings while frequently pitching in high-leverage situations. He ranks second on the team with 13 holds on the campaign.
