With established options at most, if not all, of the infield positions, Fermin's playing time is unlikely to be significant barring injuries to other players.

Fermin has missed most of the minor-league season with a quad injury and is just 4-for-24 at the plate since joining Triple-A Memphis. Fermin missed the first couple months of the 2023 season due to a severe quad strain, but he's all set now to become a regular for Memphis following a 10-game rehab stint between the Florida Complex League and Low-A Palm Beach. St. Louis acquired the 24-year-old infielder from Cleveland over the winter in exchange for cash considerations. He slashed .215/.336/.322 with six homers and nine steals in 90 games last year at Triple-A Columbus.

Fermin is dealing with a quadriceps strain, but was likely to open the year in Triple-A regardless of the injury. The infielder was acquired from the Guardians in November and added to the 40-man roster immediately after. He provides the Cardinals with organizational depth up the middle of the infield.

Fermin is dealing with a quadriceps strain and is expected to miss some extended time, John Denton of MLB.com reports.
Big-league manager Oli Marmol said Monday that Fermin is likely out multiple weeks as he nurses his injured quad. The 23-year-old was dealt from the Guardians to the Cardinals in November and had gone 1-for-8 with a double and a run scored this spring prior to getting injured. Overall, Fermin is not expected to be a large part of the team's game plan in 2023 and will likely start the year with Triple-A Memphis , though he could earn a call-up at some point this summer.

Cardinals' Jose Fermin: Dealt to St. Louis
The Cardinals acquired Fermin from the Guardians on Wednesday in exchange for cash considerations.
St. Louis immediately added Fermin to its 40-man roster, something the Guardians weren't likely to do this offseason. Since the 23-year-old would have been a candidate to get selected in the Rule 5 draft, the Guardians opted to deal him to St. Louis so as not to lose him for nothing. Fermin slashed .215/.336/.322 with six home runs and nine stolen bases across 330 plate appearances at Triple-A Columbus in 2022, and he'll likely stick around in the International League and join the Cardinals' top affiliate in Memphis to open the 2023 campaign.

Fermin was sidelined for approximately two weeks with a low-grade left hamstring strain. The 22-year-old infielder was hitting .268 with zero home runs and one stolen base in 162 plate appearances for Akron prior to landing on the IL.

Fermin was placed on the 7-day injured list at Double-A Akron with a left hamstring strain Sunday.
The 22-year-old infielder has put together a solid .268/.365/.326 slash line with 13 RBI, 21 runs scored and one stolen base across 162 plate appearances. Fermin has appeared to be more of a contact hitter in the lower levels of the minor leagues, and he's shown a good eye at the plate with a 9.2 percent walk rate compared to a 7.4 percent strikeout rate this year.
