Angels' Jack Kochanowicz: Sent back to minors
The Angels optioned Kochanowicz to Double-A Rocket City on Monday.
Kochanowicz's first stint in the big leagues wasn't promising, as he was torched for 12 runs (11 earned) over seven innings in his two starts. The big right-hander will return to Rocket City, with whom he's turned in a 4.55 ERA and 79:23 K:BB over 91 innings in 2024.

Angels' Jack Kochanowicz: Allows seven runs in loss
Kochanowicz (0-2) took the loss against the Athletics on Saturday, allowing seven runs on seven hits and three walks with four strikeouts over four innings.
Kochanowicz surrendered a three-run home run to Brent Rooker in the first frame and then four more runs in the fourth. The rookie has yielded 11 earned runs in his first seven major-league innings with five strikeouts and three walks. Should he remain in the rotation, the 23-year-old lines up for a rematch with the Athletics next week.

The rookie right-hander will be making his second turn through the rotation despite laboring in his MLB debut versus Seattle back on July 11, when he lasted just three innings while surrendering five runs (four earned) on seven hits and no walks. Kochanowicz's spot in the rotation is far from secure over the long haul, so another poor showing in Oakland could put him at risk of a demotion to the minors.

Kochanowicz (0-1) was charged with the loss against the Mariners on Thursday, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits over three innings while striking out one.
The 23-year-old got rocked right out of the gate in his major-league debut, allowing four consecutive hits to open the contest while also hitting Luke Raley with a pitch. Kochanowicz would allow four runs in the frame, though only three would be charged to him on account of a fielding error by Luis Guillorme. Kochanowicz then surrendered a leadoff homer to Cal Raleigh in the third, though the right-hander would at least make it through the inning before being relieved by Kenny Rosenberg to begin the fourth. It was an ugly first start for Kochanowicz, and there's no guarantee the rookie will remain in the rotation coming out of the All-Star break.

Angels' Jack Kochanowicz: Officially promoted
The Angels recalled Kochanowicz from Double-A Rocket City on Thursday ahead of his start versus the Mariners.
Kochanowicz will be making his MLB debut Thursday after posting a 1.85 ERA and 0.94 WHIP across 34 innings during his last five Double-A starts. Davis Daniel was optioned to Triple-A on Wednesday, so the fifth spot in the Angels' rotation currently belongs to Kochanowicz, but the 23-year-old right-hander may be sent back to the minor leagues if he struggles against MLB hitters. In order to free up a spot on the active roster, the Angels optioned Jose Marte to Triple-A.

Kochanowicz is now on the 40-man roster and protected from the Rule 5 Draft. The tall right-hander hasn't done much in the minors to this point, holding a 5.27 ERA and 69:25 K:BB over 94 innings between High-A Tri-City and Rocket City in 2023. He'll probably head back to Rocket City to begin 2024.

Kochanowicz (oblique) threw four scoreless innings with three strikeouts in his season debut for Single-A Inland Empire on Wednesday.
He missed two months with an oblique strain. Kochanowicz has a lot of lost time to make up for, as the big 6-foot-6 righty has only logged 87.1 pro innings after being a third-round pick in the 2019 Draft. This was a relatively soft landing spot, and the 21-year-old could get the bump to High-A in the coming weeks if he has continued success.

The No. 92 overall pick in the 2019 draft, Kochanowicz has only been able to pitch in one season as a pro, logging a 6.91 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 73 strikeouts in 83.1 innings at Single-A last year. He has missed significant developmental reps, and it's unclear when he will return to game action.
