Player Outlook
Already a Gold Glove caliber center fielder, Pete Crow-Armstrong got a brief taste of the majors to close his age-21 season. His contact rate was 72.5% at Double-A, 66.4% at Triple-A and 56.4% in the majors, so there is a pretty low batting average floor as things stand. He still managed a .283/.365/.511 slash line with 20 home runs and 37 steals in 107 games across the top two levels of the minors, so it's easy to see why many prospectors are excited about his power/speed potential under the assumption his defense will buy him a long leash. He has 98th percentile sprint speed but his exit velocities are middling. However, he gets the most of his average raw power thanks to a propensity to lift and pull. Seiya Suzuki and Ian Happ will return as everyday players, and Crow-Armstrong could win the third outfield spot in camp while competing against the likes of Mike Tauchman and Christopher Morel, but it's also possible the rookie returns to Triple-A if he is struggling to make enough contact in the spring.

  • Cubs' Pete Crow-Armstrong: Sent down to Triple-A

Crow-Armstrong was optioned to Triple-A Iowa on Friday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. The re-signing of Cody Bellinger seemed to spell the end of Crow-Armstrong's chances of cracking the Opening Day roster, and he's now officially headed back to Iowa where he will play every day when its season begins. Crow-Armstrong could still have a path to at-bats eventually if the Cubs wind up using Bellinger more at first base, although Mike Tauchman is higher in the center field pecking order right now.

  • Cubs' Pete Crow-Armstrong: Role could shrink

With Cody Bellinger returning to the Cubs, Crow-Armstrong may not have a clear path to MLB playing time in 2024, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. Bellinger, who agreed to return to the Cubs by signing a three-year, $80 million contract Sunday, will likely see a lot of playing time in center, which is also Crow-Armstrong's natural position. Veteran Mike Tauchman may be the top option to spell Bellinger when he rests or shifts over to first base, which could push Crow-Armstrong out of the fold. The 22-year-old still has plenty of upside and should get his shot with the Cubs soon enough.

  • Cubs' Pete Crow-Armstrong: Remains on bench

Crow-Armstrong is not in the starting lineup for Sunday's contest with Arizona. Crow-Armstrong will remain on the bench for a third consecutive game Sunday as Mike Tauchman draws another start in center field. The 21-year-old may be on the short side of a platoon in the outfield for the time being.

  • Cubs' Pete Crow-Armstrong: Sits again Saturday

Crow-Armstrong remains on the bench for Saturday's game against Arizona. Crow-Armstrong started a pair of games earlier in the week after earning his first career call-up, but he's now been on the bench for two games in a row. He's gone 0-for-7 at the plate with three strikeouts and is 0-for-1 on the basepaths, so he's yet to do much in very limited action to suggest he should be playing everyday for a potential playoff team. Mike Tauchman starts in center field Saturday.

  • Cubs' Pete Crow-Armstrong: Officially joins big club

The Cubs selected Crow-Armstrong's contract from Triple-A Iowa on Monday. Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reported earlier that Crow-Armstrong would likely be activated Tuesday, but the Cubs will make the 21-year-old outfielder's promotion official ahead of Monday's series opener versus the Rockies. The lefty-hitting Crow-Armstrong is not in the lineup Monday against southpaw Kyle Freeland, but Crow-Armstrong should play regularly in center field when the Cubs oppose right-handers. Between stops at Iowa and Double-A Tennessee this season, Crow-Armstrong hit .283 with 20 home runs and 37 stolen bases over 500 plate appearances.

  • Cubs' Pete Crow-Armstrong: Getting call to majors

The Cubs plan to call up Crow-Armstrong from Triple-A Iowa prior to Tuesday's game against the Rockies, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. The 21-year-old will make his first trip to the big leagues this week, with his arrival expected to bolster the Cubs as they prepare for a playoff run. He's expected to immediately settle in as an everyday player in center field, where he already profiles as a potential Gold Glove-caliber defender. Crow-Armstrong has also displayed some growth as a hitter in 2023 while splitting time between Iowa and Double-A Tennessee, slashing .283/.365/.511 to go with 20 home runs and 37 stolen bases in 47 attempts. Expect the Cubs to deploy Crow-Armstrong near the bottom of the lineup, though if he can keep his strikeouts in check and continue to get on base at a steady clip like he has in the minors, he should have ample opportunities to put his speed on display in September.

  • Cubs' Pete Crow-Armstrong: One step away from majors

Crow-Armstrong was promoted from Double-A Tennessee to Triple-A Iowa on Monday, Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic reports. The Cubs' center fielder of the future, Crow-Armstrong had a 150 wRC+ and 11.9 percent walk rate since May 23 and hit .368 with four home runs and four steals in his last 10 games, so it was time for a new challenge. The 21-year-old lefty hitter has a chance to aid fantasy managers in all five standard roto categories. It's not inconceivable that the Cubs could bring him up in September if he doesn't skip a beat at Triple-A, but it's more likely Crow-Armstrong debuts early next season.

  • Cubs' Pete Crow-Armstrong: Shows promise in 2022

Crow-Armstrong hit .312/.376/.520 with 16 homers, 32 steals (on 43 tries) and a 36:102 BB:K over 101 games split between Single-A and High-A in 2022. Crow-Armstrong was much better across 39 games in Single-A (.998 OPS) than in the 63 games he played in High-A (.832 OPS), but he closed out the season on a heater, batting .362/.408/.543 over his final 23 games. Notably, Crow-Armstrong struck out at just an 18.4 percent clip over that stretch -- a huge improvement over the nearly 30 percent figure he was sitting on in High-A before then. That said, he also drew just three walks in that span, so he clearly still has some work to do. Nonetheless, Crow-Armstrong has impressive tools and makeup, making him one of the Cubs' top prospects. He's still a couple years away from the big leagues, though.

  • Cubs' Pete Crow-Armstrong: Returning to action Saturday

Crow-Armstrong (hand) will return to the lineup at High-A South Bend on Saturday, Patrick Mooney of The Athletic reports. Crow-Armstrong sustained a bruise on the back of his hand last week but will bat leadoff and play center field Saturday after missing two weeks. Over nine games since being promoted to South Bend, the 20-year-old has hit .205 with two homers, a triple, three doubles, seven runs and five RBI.

  • Cubs' Pete Crow-Armstrong: Decent start at High-A

Crow-Armstrong is slashing .238/.238/.571 with two doubles, a triple, a home run, three RBI and four runs scored through five games with High-A South Bend. Crow-Armstrong moved up a level on May 30, and the 20-year-old has understandably slowed down a bit after slashing .354/.443/.557 with seven home runs and 13 stolen bases across 38 games with Single-A Myrtle Beach. He hasn't drawn a walk yet for South Bend after recording 22 walks in his time with Myrtle Beach, but the top prospect is still sporting a respectable .809 OPS at the new level thanks to his four extra-base hits in just the five contests. If Crow-Armstrong continues to drive the ball and also starts to tally some free passes, his slash line will only trend upward, and another promotion could be in order later this year.

  • Cubs' Pete Crow-Armstrong: Advances to High-A

Crow-Armstrong was promoted to High-A South Bend on Monday, Tim Stebbins of NBC Sports Chicago reports. Crow-Armstrong demolished Single-A pitching through 38 games for Myrtle Beach, slashing .354/.443/.557. He added seven homers and 13 steals, while his 18.0 percent strikeout rate and 12.0 percent walk rate both represented strong marks. He'll face a tougher test at South Bend, but another promotion later in the year can't be ruled out if he continues to find success.

  • Mets' Pete Crow-Armstrong: Shoulder surgery ordered up

The Mets announced Tuesday that Crow-Armstrong will require surgery on his right (non-throwing) shoulder to address a glenoid labral articulate disruption (GLAD) lesion, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports. New York didn't offer up a firm timetable for the 19-year-old outfield prospect's return to action, but he'll most likely end up missing most, if not all, of the 2021 season due to the procedure. According to Toscano, the Mets determined Crow-Armstrong would require surgery after an MRI revealed a tear of the labrum in his right shoulder as well as an injury to the articulate cartilage. Crow-Armstrong, the 19th overall pick in the 2020 first-year player draft, was off to a fast start to his professional career, going 10-for-24 with a pair of stolen bases in his first six games at Low-A St. Lucie.

  • Mets' Pete Crow-Armstrong: Out with shoulder injury

Crow-Armstrong was placed on the minor-league injured list Thursday due to a jammed right shoulder, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports. It's not clear how long the 19-year-old will be sidelined, but the Mets aren't likely to take any chances with him. Crow-Armstrong, a first-round pick in 2020, was off to a flying start to begin his pro career, slashing .417/.563/.500 through six games for Low-A St. Lucie with two doubles, two steals (on five attempts) and a 7:6 BB:K.
