However, third baseman Josh Jung's wrist injury, which is expected to keep him sidelined for at least six weeks, may require Duran to help fill that void.

  Walsh is expected to be named to the 26-man roster Tuesday, Dave Sessions of MLB.com reports. Walsh and Justin Foscue battled it out during spring training -- each recorded more than 50 plate appearances during Cactus League games -- but the Rangers are apparently leaning toward Walsh, a non-roster invitee that needs to be added to the 40-man roster. That much was confirmed Monday, when the transactions page of MiLB.com posted the Rangers had optioned Foscue to Triple-A Round Rock. Ultimately, it was Walsh's wealth of experience at first base that was the deciding factor. With Nathaniel Lowe (oblique) set to open the season on the injured list, the Rangers wanted a more experienced first baseman, and Foscue only started playing there this spring. The right-handed hitting Ezequiel Duran will serve as the backup and possible platoon mate for the lefty-swinging Walsh. Texas faces left-hander Justin Steele on Opening Day, which may dictate that Duran draws the start in that matchup.

The Duran part of the platoon will be in effect only if he's not needed to fill in at shortstop for Corey Seager (groin), but for now there's optimism Seager will be ready. Walsh appears set to start at first base versus righties initially either way, as he's had an impressive camp as a non-roster invitee in slashing .286/.419/.571 with three home runs. It could just be a short-term gig for Walsh, although if he gets off to a nice start he might be an option at designated hitter after Lowe returns.

  Walsh could be the leading candidate to fill in for the injured Nathaniel Lowe (oblique) at first base for the Rangers, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports. In camp as a non-roster invitee, Walsh is sporting a 1.147 OPS with one home run and a 4:3 K:BB over his first seven Cactus League games, thrusting himself into the conversation to replace Lowe. Justin Foscue looks like the other likely replacement, although he's also in the mix at designated hitter. Manager Bruce Bochy listed Blaine Crim, Ezequiel Duran, Josh Smith and Davis Wendzel as possibilities at first base as well. Walsh had a breakout 2021 season with the Angels but has flopped since then due to injuries and other health issues, posting a .613 OPS and 32.1 percent strikeout rate across 572 plate appearances at the major-league level. The 30-year-old is starting at first base and batting third for Texas in Friday's Cactus League game versus the Royals.

Walsh is gone from the 40-man roster in a string of moves following Wednesday night's trade for Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez. The 29-year-old first baseman was an All-Star in 2021 and posted an overall .850 OPS with 29 homers and 98 RBI across 118 games that season, but he drastically regressed in 2022 and had slashed just .119/.244/.224 through 28 major-league games this year while battling migraine headaches. He was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake in late June and was batting .132 with a .624 OPS in 66 plate appearances there since the demotion.
