Player Outlook
Mauricio Dubon opened 2023 as Houston's primary second baseman with Jose Altuve on the injured list and took advantage of the opportunity by hitting .309 in 37 games before Altuve was activated in mid-May. Dubon scored 27 runs during that stretch but had little other substance with no homers, eight RBI and three steals. He filled a super-utility role the rest of the way, though he split most of his playing time between center field and the keystone. He finished the campaign with a .720 OPS (97 wRC+) and is positioned to fill the utility role again in 2024 with the Astros returning most of their lineup. Dubon likely won't have much fantasy utility while Houston is healthy, but he could carve out a larger role if/when injuries surface.

  • Astros' Mauricio Dubon: Out of Houston lineup

Dubon is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game in Toronto. • Astros' Mauricio Dubon: Getting day off

Dubon is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rockies. Dubon will get the afternoon off after he had started in each of Houston's last 15 games. Though he's served mostly as a utility player during that stretch, Dubon appears to have found a home of late at first base, where he made each of his last three starts. Jon Singleton will step in for Dubon on Wednesday.

  • Astros' Mauricio Dubon: Goes yard in win

Dubon went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer in Friday's victory over the Tigers. Dubon popped a 371-foot blast of Tarik Skubal in the sixth inning for his third homer of the season. The Houston utility man drew the start at first base -- his third this season -- after the Astros released Jose Abreu earlier in the day. Jon Singleton will likely see most of the action at first base, but the move does give Dubon another path to playing time. The 29-year-old sports a .301/.327/.404 slash line in 165 plate appearances with 21 runs scored and 23 RBI.

  • Astros' Mauricio Dubon: Capturing regular outfield spot

Dubon will start in center field and bat sixth in Wednesday's game against the Giants, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. Dubon will be making his fifth consecutive start in the outfield, though he'll be occupying center Wednesday after his previous four starts came in left field. Jake Meyers appears to be receiving a routine off day Wednesday, but Dubon looks to have emerged as the Astros' preferred option in left over the struggling Chas McCormick, who is on the bench for the second day in a row after slashing .152/.152/.242 in 13 games since coming off the injured list. Dubon, meanwhile, is carrying a six-game hit streak into Wednesday's contest that has brought his batting average up to .303 for the season.

  • Astros' Mauricio Dubon: Hitting well

Dubon went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored Tuesday against the Giants. Dubon has started four straight games in left field and has started six of the team's last seven games in the absence of Kyle Tucker (leg). Dubon has hit well in that span, going 7-for-21 with one RBI and four runs scored with only a 9.1-percent strikeout rate. He'll likely return to a utility role once Tucker is activated, but he has the chance to produce in the short term.

  • Astros' Mauricio Dubon: Starting at first base Saturday

Dubon is starting at first base and batting ninth for Saturday's game against the Athletics. With southpaw JP Sears taking the mound for Oakland on Saturday, the righty-hitting Dubon will make just his fourth career start at first base while Jon Singleton begins the game on the bench. Over 39 games this season, Dubon is slashing .311/.330/.443 with two home runs and 20 RBI across 112 plate appearances.

  • Astros' Mauricio Dubon: On bench for second straight game

Dubon is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mariners, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. Dubon is on the bench for a second straight game and seems to have moved into a part-time role after he had drawn starts in the outfield in each of the first three games of May. The Astros have a regular opening in left field with Chas McCormick (hamstring) moving to the injured list, but rookie Joey Loperfido looks to have an edge on the gig, leaving Dubon to vie with Jake Meyers and Trey Cabbage for playing time at the other outfield spot while Kyle Tucker is locked in as the everyday right fielder.

His absence will move Joey Loperfido into center field while Jon Singleton starts at first base.

  • Astros' Mauricio Dubon: Remains productive

Dubon went 3-for-4 with an RBI on Friday against the Nationals. Dubon started in center field and hit ninth, which marked his ninth start in the last 11 games. In that span, he's gone 13-for-36 with a home run, nine RBI and a stolen base. Dubon has primarily cut into Jake Meyers' playing time, and that could continue so long as he remains hot at the plate.

  • Astros' Mauricio Dubon: Pops first homer of 2024

Dubon went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 5-4 extra-inning loss to Atlanta. Getting the start in center field and batting seventh, Dubon took Jesse Chavez deep in the sixth inning to give the Astros a 4-2 lead that the bullpen couldn't protect. The 29-year-old utility player has hit safely in four straight games and six of the last seven as he pushes Jake Meyers for playing time in center. On the season Dubon is batting .279 (12-for-43) with one homer, one steal, four runs and 10 RBI.

  • Astros' Mauricio Dubon: Playing time ticking up

Dubon went 2-for-4 with an RBI on Thursday against the Royals. Dubon was in the lineup for the third time in the last four games, two of which have come in center field in the place of Jake Meyers. The former has picked up a total of 13 plate appearances in that span, collecting four hits and a double with two runs scored and an RBI. Meyers is likely to return to a more regular role, but Dubon is a capable replacement if he continues to be called upon.

  • Astros' Mauricio Dubon: Scores run in win

Dubon went 1-for-4 with a run scored in Monday's 10-5 win over the Rangers. The 29-year-old is capable of playing every defensive position except catcher, and it is that ability that has gotten him into games this season for the Astros. Dubon has started only two games through Houston's first nine contests, but he has entered multiple times as a defensive replacement all over the field. If any Astro were to go down with an injury and miss significant time, Dubon is more than likely to be the man to replace him.

  • Astros' Mauricio Dubon: Key bench option

Dubon is a lock to make the Astros' Opening Day roster thanks to his defensive versatility, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. Dubon logged a career-high 492 plate appearances in 2023 and posted a passable .720 OPS with 10 homers and seven stolen bases. He'll enter the 2024 season as a bench bat, but he would likely step into a more significant role should any of the Astros' regular starters be forced to miss time thanks to his ability to play any defensive position except catcher.
