Mariners' Rowdy Tellez: Drills second homer amid slow start
Tellez homered in his lone at-bat in Friday's loss to Toronto, adding a walk.
Tellez drilled a solo homer into right field in the second inning, putting the Mariners on the board and tying the game at 1-1. A strong showing during spring training allowed Tellez to make Seattle's Opening Day roster, but the veteran slugger is off to an icy start at the plate while functioning on the strong side of a platoon at first base with Donovan Solano. Tellez is slashing .135/.195/.324 with two long balls, one double and five RBI through 41 plate appearances (14 games), so he can be left on waiver wires in the majority of fantasy leagues.

Mariners' Rowdy Tellez: On bench against lefty
Tellez is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Tigers.
The Tigers are sending southpaw Tarik Skubal to the hill, so Tellez and fellow left-handed hitter Luke Raley will hit the bench as the Mariners add a couple of extra right-handed bats to the lineup. Donovan Solano will step in for Tellez at first base.

Mariners' Rowdy Tellez: Starting at first base in opener
Tellez will start at first base and bat seventh in Thursday's opener against the Athletics, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.
The 30-year-old had appeared in line to handled designated hitter duties, but he will play first base instead while Luke Raley occupies the DH spot. Tellez is looking for a bounce-back 2025 season after he slashed only .243/.299/.392 in 131 games last year for the Pirates.

Mariners' Rowdy Tellez: Added to Opening Day roster
The Mariners selected Tellez's contract from Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday, Adam Jude of The Seattle Times reports.
Mitch Haniger's release signified that the move was coming, and now it's official. Tellez won a job by collecting an .894 OPS with three home runs this spring, and he could see fairly regular playing time against right-handed pitching between designated hitter and first base.

Mariners' Rowdy Tellez: Pushing for roster spot this spring
Tellez has made a strong case for an Opening Day roster spot this spring, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.
Tellez, who is currently a non-roster invitee, is leaving the Mariners with a tough roster decision to make ahead of Opening Day. Through 37 Cactus League at-bats, the veteran slugger is batting .297 with three home runs, two doubles and four RBI. If Tellez makes the cut, he's expected to mix in at first base with fellow left-handed hitter Luke Raley and at designated hitter with Mitch Garver as well as Mitch Haniger (shoulder).

Mariners' Rowdy Tellez: Joins Seattle
Tellez signed a minor-league deal with the Mariners on Thursday that includes an invitation to spring training, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Tellez had a disappointing 2024 season with the Pirates as he posted a .691 OPS across 421 plate appearances -- his second consecutive campaign with an OPS under .700. His fit on Seattle's roster is unclear given that both he and Luke Raley bat from the left side, though Tellez could also get some at-bats at designated hitter if he manages to crack the roster.

Rowdy Tellez: Becomes free agent
The Pirates released Tellez on Wednesday.
Tellez is now a free agent after previously being jettisoned from the Pirates' 40-man roster. The 29-year-old has hit just .231/.295/.385 over the last two seasons and is a poor defender at first base, so he could be facing a limited market this winter.

Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: DFA'd by Pittsburgh
The Pirates designated Tellez for assignment Tuesday.
Tellez slashed .310/.347/.533 from the beginning of June through the end of August, but he's hit only .116/.255/.209 in September and had been seeing his playing time dwindle. The Pirates have elected to move on from the veteran now and give his at-bats to others. Billy Cook is at first base for the Pirates on Tuesday and should share that spot with Connor Joe and Jared Triolo in the final week.

Tellez didn't start in the first game of the twin bill, but he came up as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning and drilled a 443-foot, two-run blast to right field. The first baseman added a walk later in that contest before going 0-for-4 with another walk in the nightcap. Even with the Game 1 homer Saturday, Tellez has had a rough start to September, going 3-for-18 with seven strikeouts over his first seven games.
