Mejia signed a minor-league deal with the Nationals on Friday that included an invite to spring training, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
Mejia spent all of 2022 in the Mariners' farm system at Triple-A Tacoma, where he slashed .261/.330/.433 and drove in 59 RBI over 521 plate appearances. The 28-year-old's versatility on defense could prove to be valuable for a Nationals team that will be carrying its rebuild into 2023.

Mariners' Erick Mejia: Assigned to minors camp
Mejia was assigned to minor-league camp Saturday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
Mejia will begin the 2022 season with Triple-A Tacoma after signing a minor-league contract with the Mariners in late February. The 27-year-old played in 17 games with the Royals over the last two seasons, batting .143 with two doubles and four RBI in 38 at-bats.

Mejia has yet to report to Mariners camp as of Monday due to visa issues, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.
In addition to Mejia, visa issues have also prevented outfield prospect Alberto Rodriguez and reliever Andres Munoz from arriving for the start of camp. Mejia is scheduled to attend camp as a non-roster invitee, but he's unlikely to open the season with the big club and is instead expected to fill a utility role at Triple-A Tacoma.

Mejia signed a minor-league contract with the Mariners on Feb. 8.
Mejia, a 27-year-old switch-hitting utility man, spent the entire 2021 campaign in the Royals organization at Triple-A Omaha, slashing .241/.313/.404 with seven home runs in 228 plate appearances. He previously saw MLB action with Kansas City in 2019 and 2020, appearing in 17 games across both seasons. He's expected to open the 2022 campaign at Triple-A Tacoma.

Mejia has appeared in 17 career games at the highest level, all with the Royals over the last two seasons. He owns a poor .167/.244/.222 career slash line in that limited action. He was non-tendered by the team in December but will be a part of the organization again in 2021, though he's unlikely to find himself in a prominent role.

As someone capable of playing almost any position on the field but incapable of doing much damage at the plate, Mejia was a luxury option on the 30-man roster. He appears to have cemented a spot on the 30-man roster as a super-utility player. Mejia can theoretically play almost any position on the field for Kansas City and has gotten positive reviews for his abilities behind the dish. Cam Gallagher and Meibrys Viloria are both questionable for the start of the season and Oscar Hernandez is not a lock to make the roster, so it's possible Mejia could be the de facto backup catcher to start the year. The 25-year-old switch hitter slashed .271/.339/.382 with seven home runs and 19 steals in 556 plate appearances at Triple-A last season.
