  • Mariners' Michael Chavis: Reassigned to MiLB camp

The Mariners reassigned Chavis to minor-league camp Saturday, Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM reports. Chavis signed with the Mariners in January as a non-roster invitee, but he will end up missing the cut after going 2-for-18 across eight games with two RBI and eight strikeouts. Chavis owns a .650 OPS since 2021 and will head to the minors looking to fight his way back onto the major-league bench.

  • Mariners' Michael Chavis: Gets NRI from M's

Chavis signed a minor-league contract with the Mariners on Thursday and received an invitation to big-league spring training, Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.com reports. Chavis elected free agency earlier in the offseason after slashing .242/.281/.341 across 96 plate appearances with Washington last year. He'll compete for a spot on Seattle's bench during spring training.

  • Michael Chavis: Elects free agency

Chavis cleared outright assignment waivers Wednesday and elected to become a free agent, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. Chavis compiled a .242/.281/.341 slash line with five RBI across 96 plate appearances in 2023, and he'll now look to latch on with another organization. With a .650 OPS since 2021, Chavis will likely serve in a bench role with his new team.

  • Nationals' Michael Chavis: Two hits in Sunday's start

Chavis went 2-for-4 in Sunday's win over the A's. Getting the start at second base and batting eighth, Chavis put together his first multi-hit performance since May 28. The 28-year-old has seen a slight uptick in playing time following Luis Garcia's demotion, appearing in four games so far in August and going 4-for-12 with a walk and a run, but Chavis now sits behind jake Alu on the depth chart and isn't likely to move into a starting role down the stretch.

  • Nationals' Michael Chavis: Smacks pinch-hit homer in loss

Chavis went 1-for-1 with a solo home run in Friday's 13-3 loss to the Padres. Chavis subbed in for left fielder Corey Dickerson in the ninth inning and promptly launched a 378-foot shot to left center off southpaw Ray Kerr for his first homer of the season. The former Boston prospect is slashing .262/.311/.333 across just 20 games this year, mostly being used as a late-game option against left-handed pitching.

  • Nationals' Michael Chavis: On base three times in rare start

Chavis went 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI in Sunday's loss to the Royals. Getting the start at third base and hitting seventh, Chavis delivered his first multi-hit performance of the season and drove in his second run. The 27-year-old has seen little action off the Nationals' bench this season, but over 15 appearances he's batting .290 (9-for-31) while mainly getting used against left-handed pitching.

  • Nationals' Michael Chavis: Signs minor-league deal with Nats

Chavis signed a one-year minor-league contract with the Nationals on Monday, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. The deal does not include a roster invite for spring training, so Chavis will have to prove himself in the minors before getting a potential call-up during the season. The 27-year-old struggled to a .229/.265/.389 slash line over 401 at-bats last year with the Pirates, producing 14 home runs, 49 RBI, 39 runs and one stolen base while appearing in 129 games. Considering the lack of star power on the Nationals' roster, Chavis should have a shot at the big-league level at some point this summer.

  • Michael Chavis: Set to test market

Chavis elected free agency Oct. 6. The 27-year-old corner infielder will presumably have to settle for a minor-league deal in free agency this winter after he struggled to solidify himself as a short-side platoon player for the Pirates by the end of this past season. Though he smacked 14 home runs and drove in 49 runs over 426 plate appearances, Chavis got on base at a weak .265 clip and struck out 29.6 percent of the time.

  • Pirates' Michael Chavis: DFA'd by Bucs

The Pirates designated Chavis for assignment Monday. Chavis went hitless in his last six games and has slashed .160/.216/.259 with a 33 percent strikeout rate in his last 24 contests. It's possible another organization will pick up the struggling 26-year-old off waivers, but otherwise he'll head to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Chavis went 1-for-4 with a triple, two RBI and a run scored Friday against the Cardinals. Chavis has had his path cleared as Pittsburgh's primary first baseman with Bligh Madris back at Triple-A Indianapolis and Josh VanMeter off the 40-man roster. Chavis hasn't taken advantage of that opportunity, as he entered Friday's game hitting only .152 with a 43 percent strikeout rate across his last nine games. However, he delivered a two-RBI triple in the eighth inning Friday and now has extra-base hits in each of his last two starts. For the season, Chavis owns a .238/.268/.412 line across 377 plate appearances.

  • Pirates' Michael Chavis: Blasts 14th home run

Chavis went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and an additional run scored in a 4-2 win over the Brewers on Tuesday. Chavis helped power the Pirates to a close victory, which saw him pick up his 14th home run of the campaign. Chavis is slugging .420 in 336 at-bats this season. The number is right in line with his career slugging percentage of .419. Despite having some pop in his bat, the 27-year-old first baseman is reaching base at a very poor .289 clip.
