Leathersich was given his unconditional release from Cleveland's organization Thursday.
Leathersich had appeared in 35 games for Triple-A Columbus this year, posting a 3.98 ERA and 1.44 WHIP across 31.2 innings of relief. He's pitched in a total of 24 big-league contests, including seven split between the Pirates and Cubs last season. Look for him to find a home within the next couple weeks as a depth piece.

Leathersich was designated for assignment by the Indians on Thursday.
Cleveland needed a 40-man roster spot to call up Jeff Beliveau to the big leagues, and Leathersich wound up being the roster casualty. The 27-year-old Leathersich was claimed off waivers from the Pirates just before the start of the season, but he's allowed six runs in five innings pitched for Triple-A Columbus. He'll now be exposed to waivers, though he profiles as little more than an organizational depth piece wherever he may wind up.

Indians' Jack Leathersich: Claimed by Indians, optioned to minors
Leathersich was claimed off waivers by the Indians on Tuesday.
Leathersich was immediately optioned to Triple-A Columbus upon being claimed by Cleveland. He spent most of the 2017 season with Triple-A Iowa, posting a respectable 2.84 ERA and 72:28 K:BB across 44.1 innings of relief. The 27-year-old also saw some time in the majors, notching a 3.60 ERA and seven strikeouts across 5.0 innings. He should serve as organizational bullpen depth for the Indians in 2018. In order to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Leathersich, Rob Refsnyder was traded to the Rays for cash considerations.

Pirates' Jack Leathersich: Optioned to Triple-A
The Pirates optioned Leathersich to Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday.
Leathersich's demotion leaves Josh Smoker and Kevin Siegrist as the lone left-handed relief candidates in big-league camp beyond closer Felipe Rivero, though southpaw Steven Brault could bolster the bullpen once he's eliminated from contention for a rotation spot. Unlike most lefties, Leathersich has displayed the ability to put away hitters from both sides of the plate, as he held opposing righties to a .130 average in 29.1 innings at Indianapolis last season while racking up 49 strikeouts. If he gets an extended opportunity in the big leagues at some point this season, Leathersich could be someone to keep an eye on in NL-only settings.

Pirates' Jack Leathersich: Recalled from Triple-A
Leathersich was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on Sunday.
Before being acquired by the Pirates on Sept. 4, Leathersich had been a member of the Cubs organization. He spent most of the season at Triple-A Iowa, where he threw 44.1 innings over 41 games. In that time, he posted a 2.84 ERA and 1.20 WHIP. Leathersich could be a decent source of strikeouts if he gets enough use in the majors, as he fanned 72 batters with Iowa this season.

Leathersich was optioned to Triple-A Iowa on Friday, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports.
The left-hander appeared just once for the Cubs, giving up two runs in two-thirds of an inning. Leathersich has just 12.1 major-league innings to his name but carries a decent 3.65 ERA. Whenever he returns to the bigs, however, he'll occupy a low-leverage role.

Leathersich made a solid return from Tommy John surgery in the second half of 2016, striking out 34 in 23.1 innings and allowing five earned runs. Adding him to the 40-man roster protects him from the Rule 5 draft and is another sign that he's good to go headed into 2017.

Cubs' Jack Leathersich: Pitching well during elbow rehab
Leathersich (elbow) made four appearances in the low minors in late June, giving up just one hit over four scoreless innings.
Even better, the 25-year-old lefty has struck out six and walked none. Granted, he's facing inexperienced hitters, but at least his rehab is going well. He had Tommy John surgery last July, but it looks like he'll be able to contribute for Triple-A Iowa soon, with the possibility of seeing time with the Cubs as well this summer.

Leathersich signed a minor league contract with the Cubs on Wednesday, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports.
Leathersich was non-tendered in December and is still recovering from Tommy John surgery, but the Cubs saw enough out of his progress to snap him back up. His return to the mound should come in August if all goes to plan and the southpaw could be a nice piece to help fill out the Cubs' organizational depth.

The Cubs declined to tender Leathersich (elbow) a contract, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports.
Leathersich was not even arbitration-eligible this winter, but the Cubs decided to non-tender him anyway, ending his time in the organization after just two weeks. The lefty was claimed off waivers from the Mets in mid-November. He turned in a 2.31 ERA and 1.63 WHIP in 17 appearances for New York before being forced to undergo Tommy John surgery.
